Ive stated this before but worth repeating. That stat is from the dept of Agriculture, the same dept in charge of SNAP. They sent out a survey and asked if "your child missed a meal".

Now if I am getting snap benefits Im gonna fill out a survey and say Ive got plenty.

By the way, I missed lunch three times last week, and Im not going to bed hungry.

No one seems to talk about the origin of that "stat".

To be fair, if you are morbidly obese, you are in a perpetual state of hunger, so, I mean, technically not a lie.

bullshite!!!!!!! A better question is what are the parents doing with the "food stamps" if we are feeding their kids (2/meals day) all year long?

Monroe City Schools wants to wish everyone a happy and safe summer! While school is not in session, there are some things you need to be aware of... ? Summer Feeding Program begins June 1 and continues through June 30. This program offers free breakfast and lunch to anyone 18 and under, but the meals must be consumed on site. All sites are closed on Friday. For a list of participating sites, see the flyer above. ?

I found a reference to that stat years ago, can't find it now, but it was a ridiculously loose definition of 'hunger'. Something like:

Have you, or anyone in your household, in the past 6 months:

1) Had to skip a meal due to lack of funds (that you spent on cigarettes, booze, or drugs instead)?

---Ahhh I found it "food insecurity" is their buzzword-salad for "hunger" ...

What is Food Insecurity? How many Texans are “food insecure”? According to the latest USDA report, an average 18.4% of Texas households experienced food insecurity in the years 20102012. Texas ranks among the top twelve states in terms of food insecurity rates, and second in terms of the number of food insecure households. Using related data, the national group Feeding America has estimated the number of individuals and children who lived in these households in 2010 in every Texas county.

What does “food insecure” mean? Food insecurity is the most broadly used measure of food deprivation in the United States. The USDA defines food insecurity as meaning “consistent access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.” Acceptable shorthand terms for food insecurity are “hungry, or at risk of hunger,” and “hungry, or faced the threat of hunger.” Food insecurity can also accurately be described as “a financial juggling act, where sometimes the food ball gets dropped.”

What does “food insecure” NOT mean? Food insecurity is not “the government’s definition of hunger.” It is a broader term that captures outright hunger and the coping mechanisms that households use to avoid hunger. Food insecurity is a household situation, not an individual situation. While food insecurity affects everyone in a household, it may affect them differently. Therefore it is not correct to state that specific individuals in a food insecure household (such as children) definitely experience outright hunger or specific coping mechanisms. Rather than describing these individuals as being “food insecure”, they should be referred to as “living in a food insecure home.” Food insecurity is a yearlong measure. Therefore, it is not correct to assert that every food insecure household is experiencing food insecurity “right now,” will experience hunger “tonight” or “does not know where their next meal is coming from.” Research shows that food insecurity tends to be episodic and often cyclical. Food insecurity does not mean that a household lacks access to grocery stores, lives in a “food desert,” or does not have time to shop/cook. It only refers to lack of food access based on financial and other material resources.

My old church used to hand out backpacks of food on Fridays at a poor elementary school. They quit because the kids were trying to eat everything out of the bags before they got home because that was the only way they'd get any of the food.

There absolutely are children going hungry in this country. But it's 100% because of shite parents that refuse to feed their kids.

The only reason a kid goes hungry is in the country is because they have worthless arse parents.

The fricking government, even in red states, gives away billions in assistance.

I do not want any kid to be hungry. I want all kids to live happy and carefree lives. If we feed some cheats so that the underprivileged will get what they need then so be it.
