Millions dropped from SNAP food assistance as funding faces September uncertainty

We really don't need these programs anymore, they are counter productive. People used to be helped by their communities. If you wanted help, you had to humble yourself, put in some effort, and ask. Now the government forces mass unchecked assistance, which only negatively affects the working man who tries to do the right thing. People need to be encouraged to move away if they don't have opportunity in a certain area. This is a large country that needs people in plenty of regions. But now they can just horde together in large cities and be burden. Proliferating while hard working people foot the bill.

As a kid who grew up in poverty before welare (and suffered from malnutrition) I can tell you that we did NOT want help. Poor people had pride in those days. If welfare existed we would not have accepted it. We wore clothes until they had holes in them. Nobody mocked you because lots of kids were poor and the rich kids were taught good manners.
The rich and the poor mocked only one group....the homeless guy sitting on the street corner addicted to drugs or alchohol. He was used as a teaching tool for parents who told us: 'Zach, dis is what gonna happen to ya if you don't work hard and stay off dem drugs.' It worked.

Anecdotal: Here is something I have noticed from a lot of folks who complain they don't have money/need more SNAP assistance....
I work in a downtown area of a midsize college town. Instead of walking to a diner two blocks away and getting a pretty good sized plate lunch for 10 bucks plus tax, they will buy 20 ounce sodas and bags of chips out of vending machines and end up spending 4.50 to 6.00 on that.
It's always the most inefficient purchases....small individual items and a lot of name brand stuff to make the cost as expensive as possible for as little as possible.

I grew up poor too. Spent some of my childhood with foodstamps. Pride didn't feed me when I was hungry.

Food stamps is a misguided program because either 1. The hungry kids are a motivator for the parents
Or 2. The parents are on drugs and will sell the food stamps for drug money
It’s not like a kid can drive to the grocery store
Some sort of combination school lunches/ delivered staples to the house would work better than food stamps but of course the junk food companies pay lobbyists because they’re the main beneficiaries of snap

What a beautiful idea. A state gets to help the citizens within that the state is closer to.

And if it's not, or the parent is struggling to get a job the kid suffers through no fault of their own, which i think we all as a society have an interest in trying to prevent.

I don't disagree with you there. I think the school breakfast/lunch program is a great help to those in need. We also had when I was a kid a program that I only knew as Commodities where once a month we could go and pick up staples to help us get through the month. It wasn't the most exciting foods, but it kept us fed so I'm damn grateful for it.

Most of the stuff I remember getting was a lot of canned mackerel and salmon. I can't eat either one to this day lol.
