State and local governments are warning of a wave of layoffs and pay cuts after getting left out of the federal coronavirus relief package expected to pass Congress this week.

In many places, those painful reductions are already taking shape:

Los Angeles plans to force city workers to spend 26 days on unpaid leave as revenues are forecast to drop as much as $600 million next fiscal year.

Detroit has proposed laying off 200 workers and furloughing thousands more.

In Ohio's Hamilton County, Commissioner Denise Driehaus is taking a 10% pay cut alongside county workers.

"We are really struggling," Driehaus said.

Good - they forced the hand in this shutdown on the private sector.

Lets stay shut down longer. Nothing like protecting health. Will be all we have after this. All politicians should be forced to UI just like everyone else.

Really depends on what area of government they work for, IMO.

The state can really use this to start trimming some of the excess workers the state has on payroll, if they really wanted to, but they wont.

Well, maybe this is the silver lining. Showing that government at all levels across the country is bloated and can be downsized and still function

I think most stay home government workers are getting full pay during this crisis.

If nothing else this should maybe push a few more to the open things up side.

Many of these governments do things that really aren't their responsibility.

For example, does a local government need to provide grants to local artists? Or the always discussed state "film commissions"?

If they would cut that garbage first and not mess with salaries and benefits of first responders, I'd be good with things.

If nothing else, this proves that the government does not exist without the free market to support it.

The feds shouldn't be responsible for state employee's salaries anyway. Government jobs are the jobs no one has talked about being reduced during this time and definitely no cut in their pay if their job has been reduced. Weird isn't it?

This situation will be the driving force behind pressuring the politicians to lift their "stay home" dictates.
