Appointing a spouse or other close relative to finish out a term has been a thing for a long time but it was once understood that the appointed would not seek re-election and it was a classy way for the governor to keep his thumb off the scale by not granting a candidate the heavy advantage of incumbency. That is no longer working. Mostly because of the vast wealth accumulated by sitting members of Congress.
