Makes sense once you realize the teachers aren't any more proficient in reading or math either.

There is an older documentary called “Waiting For Superman” that has some really interesting profiles and deep dive stories into why many schools/students are not under funded. The problems are elsewhere.

Particularly in large urban areas.

Check it out, it’s a really informative doc.

Education sucks, but it’s mainly the parents, or lack of them

That’s my view, as well.

Imagine if the nuclear family still had a stay at home parent who ran the house and managed all material that came into the purview if their children...

This goes deep and is intertwined into a number of social movements.

When you compare the money spent in La. on public education it’s apparent that money isn’t the problem or the answer.

Anyone paying attention knows public schools are not being underfunded.

No. The bigger issues are the abhorrent world views that public schools have to bear, teacher unions, and to a lesser extent family life.

Insanity. Beyond just the obvious in that we have far too much bureaucracy and red tape we’re throwing money at the problems in education thinking that will somehow counter a culture hostile to learning. Louisiana is full of people who hate to learn, both white and black. The people from the hood who think educating oneself is akin to being an Uncle Tom and acting white and that their future lies in rapping or sports, and the rednecks that think teachers are all part of a vast liberal conspiracy to brainwash the kids.

This state has no hope.

On what? My 5th graders didn’t have a single textbook or workbook, and I had to buy a lot of my own copy paper.

For many families that’s not economically feasible though unfortunately. The 50s and post WW2 boom America experienced is over and over the past few decades we’ve gutted the middle class in order to do handouts to the bottom and the top.

That’s so bizarre how they’d take that position, and what the frick does it have to do with black people being killed by police? I thought that was the whole point of BLM was to combat "police brutality" but then they started pushing all sorts of crap like that.

it’s equally concerning that only 48% of 8th graders in Catholic schools were proficient. we have a serious brain drain occurring. I’m only 29, went to a relatively small school in Texas, and I don’t think a single kid in my 8th grade class would’ve scored under the proficiency threshold

This was a nationwide number - still concerning though - but there are some really terrible (ghetto & redneck) Catholic schools out there

Ghetto = a few in New Orleans and Baton Rouge I can think of

Red neck = some of the mission schools run by priests in Appalachia

I’m your first downvote.

It’s 73%.

Maybe the teachers need to start teaching math then. Being out of school since March will hurt them too.

Some of you older guys may remember this story. Back over 20 years ago in New Orleans there was a shooting, one kid who was 10 had a friend pass a gun through the fence so it would not pass the metal detector, went in the school, shot an 11 year old, who then took the gun from him and chased him through the school shooting at him.

The parents showed up screaming my babies, my babies. The super showed up and said. Due to funding we had to close one school and merge the two, both had separate housing projects and we knew there would be trouble and posted notes in the projects to that effect. We have metal detectors at the fence line, barbed wire, in house security and stepped up patrols from the cops.

Still, fights started breaking out and we posted notes for a parent teacher school meeting.....no one bothered. Now we have children shot. Who the frick raises a 10 year old and sees no abnormal behavior when they are driven to the point of bringing a gun to school and shoot someone. We are not the parents/guardians/maid/cook for your kids..THATS YOUR JOB.

The breakdown of the nuclear family, teacher unions, and the infamous "dear colleague" letter from the obama administration has turned most inner city schools into day care centers.

So class of 20 costs 250k a year approximately. Give me 20 students to teach and 250k. I will give each kid 1000 bucks to do their schoolwork. And pocket the rest
