Not sure. What most of the waste is is heavy plutonium left over from the creation of nuclear fuel. We split the atoms to create isotopes, the waste is the unwanted isotope created by the splitting...keeping it very simple.

Depending how deep undergroind they go, there is not much, if any concern of it getting out. The Gulf coast isn't like the California coast where fault lines open underground pockets to the water column.

What about locking it in a salt dome?

We use salt domes to store oil reserves and mine for salt either through using water to convert salt to brine or sending men to down to physically remove the salt.

Salt domes would be hundreds if not thousands of feed deep and as long as the strata around the dome is not pierced like in Lake Peigneur or Bayou Corne it would be a safe place to store anything.


There are also former Sulfur mines that were drained of sulfur.

Yes, but there is a really big difference between NORM and waste made from fuel enrichment.

Storing it underneath the deserts seem better

Now we know the origin story of the Land of the Lost lizard people. They used to be gators from the gulf coast.
