I would have to go back and check, but if I recall correctly, the MH tax came really, really close last time.

Yes, I believe it was last year.
Like I said, I respect the vote but if you keep giving the pro tax prople do overs they will eventually win.

And keep in mind, they carefully choose when to hold the vote. Why didn't we vote on this in November?

I think I know why.

December 2016. Along with the Mental Health tax.

When did the public vote a roads tax down in EBRParish? The Council voted it down earlier this year and told the Mayor to come back with a more detailed proposal which she did. That second proposal is what we voted on today.

The roads proposal was a property tax in 2016, not a sales tax. Big difference to some people.

Hillary Clinton carried EBRP in 1016 with 53% of the vote to 47% for the other three candidates.

Roads improvements get lots of Republican votes as well as Democratic votes.

It’s actually a huge difference to me. I voted no today but I much rather a sales tax than a property tax. Someone posted earlier that we already have 32 property taxes on the books. That’s insane

It was actually in the form of both a sales and property tax.
quote:

Voters in EBR voted 'yes' on the rededication of a half-cent sales tax that would be used exclusively to provide funds to repair and construct public roads on a pay-as-you-go basis, and to construct community enhancement road projects throughout EBR including the cities of Baker, Zachary, and Central. 53% voted yes, while 47% voted 'no,' with a margin of victory of a little over 6,000 votes out of a total of 107,540 votes. However, voters also said 'no' on the proposed 30-year, 5-mill property tax that would generate about $20.2 million per year for improving existing public roads and constructing new public roads throughout the same areas. Opposite of the approved rededication of tax, 53% voted 'no', while 47% voted 'yes,' with a margin of victory of less than 5,000 votes out of a total of 108,315 votes.

Random data point:

My precinct voted in favor of Ardoin and Bargas at an 85% clip and in favor of roads tax at 54%.

Thanks for the reminder about the property tax for roads in 2016. I had forgotten about that. Lots of Dems had to vote NO on that for it to fail.

Yep. Ardoin is leading statewide 60/40, but only 52/48 in EBR. Still early, but it looks like "republicans" are the ones who just gave us a tax increase.

Exactly. The people most likely to vote in off elections are old white people (like me). In the South, they tend to vote Republican. If Repubs voted lockstep against the Roads tax today, it might well have failed.

Man I really wish all votes for taxes were forced to be on federal elections. Let an actual representation of public sentiment decide. That way if taxes I don’t want is voted in, I at least remove all doubt I’m in the minority

This vote is further confirmation that people are gullible. And not smart.
