I just went down a bit of a rabbit hole after I read the second article you posted. I had never heard of Clarence, Louisiana. And I looked it up to learn more, and found this article.

Holy shite I could not even imagine a political entity like this could even exist here in Louisiana.

This is totally arse-backerds

Chinese Virus has shown the way to the work-at-home future

Once that happens, more and more people will want to move to small towns to get away from the people the Advocate panders to

We sorely need to update the Constitution. We do NOT need to attempt it with Honor Code in charge.

that would be a progressive’s wet dream, to expand the areas of parishes like Orleans, and take in white flight areas who thought they were escaping the city

naw those suburb parishes would probably only get bigger

it's the unpopulated ones that are the issue. the focus would be on combining them into larger units

nothing prevents them from doing this plan with that area not being incorporated by towns, villages, etc and instead being unincorporated in a larger parish unit

Why do we need Tensas Parish? There are 4,000 people there. Carve it up and tack on the remnants to neighboring parishes.

EBR doesn’t have 500,000 people and I believe we are the most populated parish in the state now.

it better be as close to Texas/Florida/Tenn as humanly possible as those states have eaten our lunch

Can't speak for the first two, but just know that Tennessee was in shambles about 20-25 years ago. Budget was wrecked, no rainy day fund, very little outside investment.

We've had a good run with business-minded governors. It remains to be seen how the large increase in the Nashville and Chattanooga metros will affect state politics going forward. Not in 4-5 years, but certainly in 7-10.

In my experience, we lack the culture of graft and administrative racketeering that Louisiana takes such pride in, which will ultimately be too hard for y'all to ever overcome. It's like Cook County, IL for a whole state.

that's what made me think about this. is the entire state going to be a speed trap now?

We'll just rename the whole state "Krotz Springs".

The only way for Louisiana to get rid of its speed trap cities is to make the cities forfeit fines over a certain percentage of revenue OR penalize salaries of those in charge when their fines make up a certain percentage of revenue. I don't trust ANY lawmaker to go in and make the Louisiana constitution better than it is right now.

Louisiana should have 10-12 parishes. At most. We have 4,000,000 people. This is absurd they have 64.

I can't go with you here, SFP. People have a right to form small towns and villages and make rules within the limits, and it Trump's your right to occasionally pass through them without slowing down.

They should only be able to collect on city-funded roads

No interstates, state highways, or parish roads

This state can’t even shut down a college with an 8 percent graduation rate.

You think we are getting rid of parishes?

I’m all for it, but there are too many entrenched interests.

People see the neighboring parish and/or town as the enemy and would never merge or join forces.

After a cursory glance at a parish map, I have to say of the parishes are too big. CenLA sure has some bigass parishes.

The purpose of a parish/county is to localize gov't. 10-12 is not enough for that.

You can consolidate some. WBR and Iberville, Laffy and St. Martin, The Carrolls, Felicanas, chop up Lincoln, Webster... The ones between EBR and
Lafourche could be one or two at the most

But I'd split Tangy. At least make Hammond the seat.
