What are we voting for today? What's a YES and what's a NO?
Posted on 5/16/26 at 6:57 am to SCUBAislander
Amendment 1
“Do you support an amendment to allow the legislature to remove or add officers, positions, and employees to the unclassified state civil service?”
Amendment 2
“Do you support an amendment to grant the St. George community school system in East Baton Rouge Parish the same authority granted parishes for purposes of Article VIII, Section 13 of the Constitution of Louisiana, including purposes related to the minimum foundation program, funding for certain school books and instructional materials, and the raising of certain local revenues for the support of elementary and secondary schools?”
Amendment 3
“Do you support an amendment to fund a $2,250 teacher pay raise and $1,125 support staff pay raise by utilizing the remaining savings from paying down the debt of the Teachers’ Retirement System of Louisiana with monies from certain
constitutional funds?”
Amendment 4
“Do you support an amendment to allow a parish to reduce or exempt property tax on property held as business inventory and to provide for the classification of Public Service Property?”
Amendment 5
“Do you support an amendment to change the mandatory retirement age for judges from seventy to seventy-five, provided that a judge may continue to serve to complete a term of office?”

1. frick no. The only thing which would make state government worse is if the legislature gets to hire and fire the rank-and-file workers for not bowing and scraping enough when they walk by.
2. Yes. The entire St. George drama was started because the parents there wanted more accountability and input into the school system in their area. A vote against this is a vote against parents being able to hold failing schools accountable.
3. No (moderately). Those programs pay out, BESE has full authority to spend their portion how they want. If they choose to not use it to pay teachers more, that's on them. Using the funds to pay down retirement debt is a worthwhile endeavor, but if they do this I don't want to hear a fricking word about the programs which had to be cut because of this.
4. Yes, absolutely. An inventory tax has got to be one of the most moronic, anti-business (and thus "anti-jobs") tax idea on the books. This shouldn't even be a question. I would rather see it done away with entirely, but letting the localities use it as a competition tool doesn't hurt my feelings.
5. No. We already bitch about people staying in various governmental roles too long. Why the hell would we want to RAISE the age limit for mandatory retirement on any of them?

In regards to #2
I 100% agree to a YES vote but as a resident in EBR should I vote NO only because they are going to raise my property taxes to generate the revenue EBR lost to St. George school district.

I work in public education and completely agree with your last sentence. Another reason I am leaning “no” is if they decide they need the money back, where will they get it?

Pretty much my thoughts as well.
1: Big frick no.
2: The biggest yes possible. I thought it was asinine 12 or 13 years ago to go with St. George. That changed quickly when I realized that the EBR school system couldn’t even provide buses to and from school reliably.
3: No, though I could see this going yes & yet be okay with it.
4: Yes, but I’m curious how the state will interpret the verbiage, “Public Service Property.” If it’s ruled as a service provided to the public and it can’t be infringed upon by the public or government, then yes. If they interpret it to the contrary, then that’s a huge issue. After the McDonald’s coffee lawsuit, my trust in the ability for judgments to be correct has dwindled & I have been more skeptical about verbiage used by any form of government.
5: No. 70 is long enough for someone to work. They might be the best judge the state has, but I think they should be retired by then. I view a judge differently than other elected officials, which I certainly want term limits on them.

Question: Who were the greedy jug headed politicians who came up with this and who was the idiotic governor who signed it into law?

It's in the Louisiana constitution, which voters passed in 1974.
The proposed amendment amends the constitution.

So you are against local parishes voting to lower their taxes???

You should vote yes and then demand EBRPSS slash their bullshite administrative bloat (district and school level) and REDUCE their budget in light of the reduced number of students in the district.**
If they try to raise taxes, there should be a revolt on S. Foster.
** BTW, this is the real reason EBRPSS is fighting this so hard. Public school funding from the state and feds is based on number of students enrolled. They dont care about these kids, they just want the fricking bodies.

Heck no. I want this idiotic tax taken off the books permanently. I have been around business for nearly 40 years and EVERY freaking owner, manager hates it.
Talk about a job and business killer.
BTW, a little research turned this up:
quote:
Inventory tax has been levied in Louisiana since the 1800s and was enshrined in the state’s 1974 constitution. Business inventory tax in Lafayette is assessed as a percentage of the value of the inventory on hand, which could be cereal in a grocery store or an excavator on a construction site. Some of the largest payers of inventory tax in the parish are car dealerships.
I am willing to bet doughnuts to pennies that slime ball edwin edwards was behind and pushed this on the La Constitutional ballot.
IF passed, this is ONLY a start. A lot of the po-dunk parishes in Louisiana are gonna whine and moan about how 'racists' and 'unfair' it is.
quote:
If passed, the proposition doesn’t do away with the tax automatically. Parishes would need to opt-in to sunsetting the tax, and the measure includes a reimbursement incentive to encourage parishes across the state to make the move, but it fails to make all parishes whole.

Get rid of the inventory tax. Don’t care about the other ones
