Listen to the podcast “gangster capitalism”. That’s exactly what happened. Kids would spend the lives trying to get scholarships for sports and these rich kids would be given a scholarship and take a sport on the sports teams away from kids who were trying to gets spots on the teams.

I tend to agree with you, except for a couple of points....
1) What they did was wrong, and they appear to be unable to think beyond their own self-absorbed egos to understand why....and,
2) Attempting to buy access to a resource that's limited (i.e. scholarships intended for truly deserving candidates) for the purpose of attaining unwarranted popularity and credibility is akin to a politician handing out $100 bills at the voting booth.
It stinks of "elitist" narcissism - and to think they could've used those dollars to donate to the university and likely gotten special treatment anyway from the school's admissions department.....which leads me to my last point...
3) it was just downright stupid!

Shouldn't have been such an arrogant bitch.

Why are you bringing race into this?
So:
$500,000 Bribe? Check
Hid it through a charitable fund? Check
Claimed gift on taxes? Check
Refused plea bargain? Check
And I'm sure this is the first and only time her and her husband did anything wrong.

Mess with the bull and you get the horns. They should have thought of the consequences ahead of time. You know, like responsible people do.

Just trying to picture her dropping a deuce in one of these

Take the plea. Or the Feds get really, really vengeful. By the time this is done, the punishment will exceed the crime (and it was definitely a crime) by a factor of ten.

Should've taken the deal when offered. She'd be done here in a couple of weeks.
Posted on 10/23/19 at 12:13 pm to Homesick Tiger
It should not be a crime anyway. It’s BS

I don't really give a shite about the bribe.
I don't even really care enough about the kid getting in ahead of others to consider it jail worthy
But LOL. Claiming your bribes as charitable deductions?
Yeah. Sorry. That's gonna leave a mark

I still don't get the whole criminal part of this. USC is a private organization. If she is willing to give them a half-million $ gift to get her child in, why should anyone care?
It's like, if a woman wants to sell the use of her body to earn a living, what business is it of mine to care?
I both cases it is private business between consenting parties that do no harm to anyone outside the two parties to the arrangement.

Because that is not at all what happened. Fraudulently took SAT tests to inflate score and bribe athletic coaches for a spot on the team. They did not bribe or hand money to the school. The coaches pocketed the money it did not get used to enhance the school in any way.

Lori Laughlin is a fricking idiot. She should've taken the plea deal the feds were offering her back in the spring and she could've been home by Christmas. But no, she thought that her fancy lawyer and pussy pass could beat the 95% convection rate the feds have. Her lawyers should’ve been screaming at her that she can’t win.
Her stupid arse is looking at a hell of a lot more prison time now.
For comparison's sake, Felicity Huffman is getting out of prison next Monday, will only have to do a year of supervised released and she will have nothing further to do with this horrible debacle for the rest of her life in 2021.
That's a hell of a deal.

if she had done this, it likely would have been fine
they didn't do this

Weren't they offered a plea deal that would have been a slap on the wrist? Should have admitted guilt and moved on.

I don't think so. Huffman was. But, she only paid out 15k for SAT score bump AND later decided NOT to do it again with a second child.
Lori was always going to get more than Huffman. But, relative to what she faces now (with conviction)...yeeeesh. She would have been much better settling

Her own vanity is partially responsible for this. I'm no fan of the FBI or U.S. Attorneys, but they rarely prosecute public cases like this unless they're airtight.
This. Goddamn.
The federal government is not in the business of losing cases at trial in a courtroom and being embarrassed over it. It’s no accident as to why the feds have a 95% conviction rate.
Lori Laughlin’s lawyers should have been screaming this at her from the get go.
If they’re bringing charges against you, you’re fricked and you better start angling for the best plea deal you can get.
