It’s a huge thing in Central America and South America, IIRC, as the darker you are means that your ancestors were more likely black or the local natives rather than European settlers.

for everything good humans have built on this rock, the fact that so many people cannot move past value judgements based on melanin concentration in skin cells is mind boggling.

That's not even the reason in most of the world, it's that having darker skin meant (or means, because it's still a thing in a lot of cultures) you worked outside as a laborer. It's a prejudice based on economics, not melanin.

There's an interesting youtuber named Robert Sepehr who's an anthropologist. He covers a lot of different topics and one of them was about where white people came from. And he gives a lot of documentation from ancient texts.

A theory he finds pretty compelling is that all white people came from the Caucuses Mountains (hence name Caucasion). They migrated west to what is now Europe and Scandinavia and south to the Mediterranean states.
They were described in texts going back 5,000 years as being blonde, blue eyed, very tall like giants and very strong.
They took over leadership of lands they settled in.

The guy is neither left nor right wing. But if anyone is offended by his views he clearly doesn't give a shite.

You can be black. No problem. Ask Rachel Dolezal or Talcum X.

It was when I worked at the shitty finance company near Gentilly that I first heard the term "High Yella." It was one of my coworkers bitching about a customer, and saying she wasn't black enough.

Dark skinned blacks make fun of light skins, and vice versa.

It was interesting to me. The longer I worked in primarily black communities, the more I saw they aren't this homogeneous thing.

t was eye opening being the only white guy at work and listening to the black folks discriminate each other based off light skin, dark skin, good hair, etc, etc. I never knew that was a thing.

My exact experience the first time I heard "high yella".

I used to laugh my arse off listening to the guys on the basketball team make fun of each other for being too dark or too bright.

One my favs was, “you high yella mother fricker”, when the light skinned guy was the target.

Always had me in stitches.

Skin tone being viewed as a class indicator has been a thing all over the world well before the US ever existed. It's huge in Asian communities, India, etc tec tec.

This but it is ignored. You won't find a more racist/prejudiced country than India.

See what had happened was...

The Caucasians were the first group to develop and utilize both the Chariot and bronze weapons/armor. As such, they had a huge mobility advantage over all of the fledgling societies of Europe and West/South/Central Asia. As such, members of this society essentially conquered EVERYONE else for a time despite not really having that many people. They spread their language and religion which became the basis for most pre-Abrahamic religions and languages.

Eventually, the conquered peoples were able to achieve technological parity and the Indo/Aryan empire collapsed into the smaller states that we know of from the Bronze Age, but not before leaving a huge mark both genetically and phonetically. However, it appears these people lacked a written language, so the records of them are scarce. The story of this civilization is told more in the genetic record than in the archaeological record.

It's interesting seeing it all play out when you are in a tech environment that has a random mix of Indians.

That's interesting and sad too. I was going to ask..."but where did they come from?" but this last part probably makes it hard to know.

I have worked with India Indians for decades. They would talk about light and dark Indians and lighter skin being more desirable.

check this out

and again, it is somehow European or whites fault.

Another phrase that used to be used in Tidewater Virginia was "Blue Gum".
Didn't the paper bag test used to be very specifically "A Schwegmann's Bag"?

And the phrase "Brite" or "Bright" was something I only heard in New Orleans when I talked to black people I knew and we talked about race and why some couldn't advance within their trades, several used the "I'm not brite enough" and I'd ask what did that mean.

When the Moors went to Iceland and kidnapped several communities of Icelandics, the oldest were killed, the strong young were sold as slaves in North Africa, if they converted, they got their freedom but no money, some were put into harems, and the elders had prices put on their heads if Denmark could pay the ransomes. An Icelandic sold his country out to the ship captains who were looking for easy pickings for their livestock / slave market. That's one way to lighten skin tones over generations.

The amount of genetics passed on through the white slaves in Africa is pretty small, considering their huge number. We know that the men were pretty much all castrated, usually in a crude manner.

The white females were often turned into sex slaves, but the Muslims simply slaughtered the resulting offspring of these unions.
