I don’t think the left gave him a choice.
He certainly pushed back on things, though. Enough that I don’t think it’s out of bounds to potentially go after Fauci if his actual thoughts on Covid veered wildly from his recommendations. Recommendations that states used to frick us.
I don’t think what Trump did during Covid invalidates any measure he’d take now. I haven’t seen you post anything in here that would bring anyone to your conclusion that it’s ridiculous.

If he was berating Fauci in spring 2020 he certainly had time to curb things but he did not. If you recall, he initially blasted Georgia for opening “too early.”

Every Tom, Dick and Harry celebrity, media person, infectious disease ‘expert’ was in on the hoax. Trump is not a scientist, but he has a lot of common sense and big picture vision.
They were never gonna let Trump act contrary to the “science” and narrative they were pushing.
Trump did what he could while getting pushback every step of the way.

Would curb things have been trying to force states to go with a different plan of action and relax things to you me and his liking?
If so, I think that would have been the end of him. And beyond that, allowing states to run their own show was at the least, perfectly fine.
ETA: By end of him I mean the left would have conspired to end his presidency and likely freedom.

I think the commendation is the best way to view how Trump viewed Fauci's performance by the end of his term. He either thought he had done a good job or at least it was politically expedient to publicly commend him.

At what point do you think Trump should have fired Fauci? At what point should he have tried to prosecute him? Or another way of asking might be what point would he be blameworthy for opposing those things?
