I agree. The sooner we get Government school teachers educating our children that government generates all the wealth in this country and that paying taxes is our primary reason for existence, the better.

If basic investing was taught in highschools - the dnc wouldn’t exist

high school kids are only required a 1/2 Carnegie unit of economics, and if a decent percentage of them are stuck with a teacher that doesn't understand or teach economics - is this a key reason that the average American doesn't understand basic economics?
No.

Its not uncommon for high school coaches to teach social studies/including economics
They are shoveled into all kinds of subjects they know nothing about. We had a coach forced to teach a one semester class of sociology.
True story:
Him: 'Class, turn to chapter 4 in your book. Marital Relations.'
His brain switched the 'i' and the 't' and he pronounced it 'Marshall Relations'.
Me: 'Coach, is that when husbands go to war with their wives?'
Him: 'What??'
Me: 'Maybe you mean Marital Relations.'
He looked at the word again and looked at me: 'Zach, someday someone's gonna whip your arse.'

quote:In your first math class (a.k.a. arithmetic) you learn your numbers, how to count and how to add and subtract.
If its just basic concepts like supply and demand, I would argue around half if not most people understand that much.
If we are talking about the ability to analyze a supply chain in detail to determine potential weak points, bottlenecks, etc, how interest rates work, how taxes and tax rates work, etc then I would bet less than 10% truly understand it.
If you're taking an abstract algebra or a statistics & probability class, you're bumping your head on the top of the mathmatics chain.
Success at any level between the two will depend upon the individuals ability and desire, so if you can't understand it, or don't care to make the effort to, go elsewhere.

Lol. You’d have to teach 30% of high schoolers to read first.

What was your method of teaching the law of diminishing return? I'll tell you my Econ professor in graduate school's method of explaining. It stuck with after all of these years
I used a curve and labor output but your method is probably much more awesome than mine

I didn't have economics in high school, but I still managed to learn a bit on my own. This was before Khan Academy, Ted Ed, and a myriad of other internet courses. Why we insist on brick and mortar schooling is beyond me.

My grandfather was the chair of the Economics Department at Miami (FL) for 25 years before he retired. I got a real good understanding of the subject as a kid.
Kinda on topic- anyone else do the Junior Achievement projects in HS Econ class? That really piqued my interest in the subject as well.

So why doesn't the school district hire a full time econ teacher instead of making a coach do double duty?
The answer is simple: economics! One person doing the job of two people is cheaper than hiring 2 people. Not effectively in this case though. Devil's advocate - maybe the coach has a lesson in mind here the kid doesn't see yet.

Here's the thing that really stands out. I saw the student, he was clean cut, articulate and made a good point.
If you click on @fruguy24's account and he's an obvious Antifa loving lefty.

Coach knows football team floats the school budget. he's teaching him economics without him realizing it.

Well in a country where 17 of the brightest economists in the world tell us that increasing the money supply by trillions will not cause inflation, quite the contrary we need to dump another trillion in and call it some snappy name like bbb....I feel like I was shortchanged in all my economics classes.

High school football barely pays for itself at 99% of schools. Its not college. That's why they are having a fundraiser for a turf field.
I sit on the board of our high school's booster club. Its one of the largest schools in Mississippi. Band runs the concession stands and covers their expenses with a little cushion. Tickets pay for football equipment, we're able to charter busses to away games instead of taking school busses, and we have enough left over for a nice end of season banquet.
Cheerleaders have to pay a $2000 fee for their uniforms, travel, etc. I had a meeting last week with a mad parent that cheerleaders had to pay and football gets everything paid for. There is nothing close to "floating the school budget" happening at any high school football program. The ones that make money are few and far between.

How would you like to be a BC grad and see her dumbass get interviewed? I'd love to know how much she has devalued that degree.

Among extracurricular activities football probably has the biggest economic impact to the school's bottom line.

One big problem with our education system is that we no longer teach basic economics or civics.
It’s almost like the government doesn’t want us to learn how things are “supposed” to work.
