The argument that he should have known is as follows:
It’s apparent to most reasonable people that the victim was not a threat to life or limb when the pistol was drawn.
We have the benefit of still frames and multiple views. Things moved fast in real time, but the reason things moved so fast was of Dolloffs own doing. His handgun was unnecessarily drawn and he himself sped things up “too fast”, so fast that the victim who was already holding a defensive weapon barely had time to engage his spray. They both fired almost simultaneously.
There are no reasonable grounds for self defense, which the statute clearly states must exist for deadly force to be legally utilized, irrespective of the beliefs of the one using said force.

We should have some takeaways from what we’re watching in Portland, Seattle, Kenosha, Denver and St. Louis.
1) The courts aren’t your friend and aren’t interested in justice. Don’t depend on the ideas of fairness and rightness of action.
2) Don’t engage the left on ideas in a public setting. It’s not an internet argument. Don’t engage provocateurs.
3) Travel in large groups. The hyenas look for the lone antelope.
4) The police are there because they have to be. They’ll write up a report after you’re dead.
5) Don’t be concerned with ego. Be concerned with survival.

Very sensible advice.
There's no points in life for winning a shouting match in the street or having your ego tell you that you came out on top of a particular interaction.
Edited to add: I am absolutely on board with the culpability of the shooter, the provocateur and news agency for the incitement of the situation and murder of the deceased. They should all hang publicly as a lesson in order to attempt to turn this shitshow around.

But you ascribing to them a motive of making their domestic enemies look bad overlooks the more likely reason.
These low level "journalists" are more likely setting this up for the purpose of "clickbait" than to influence national politics. This seems to fit being a ploy to get attention to further their own careers.
And the fact that they were willing to do this at all shows severely corrupted character. Self-interest without regard for the consequences is the most likely driver.
