Trump's ultimatum: US Senate puts Russian sanctions on hold – Politico
Ivanna Kostina, STANISLAV POHORILOV — Tuesday, 15 July 2025, 14:11
US Senate Majority Leader John Thune has said he will not promote a package of sanctions against Russia's trading partners after US President Donald Trump had issued an ultimatum to Russia to encourage Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to move towards a peace deal with Ukraine.
Source: European Pravda, citing Politico
Quote from Thune: "It sounds like right now the president is going to attempt to do some of this on his own. If at some point the president concludes that it makes sense and adds value and leverage that he needs in those negotiations to move the bill, then we’ll do it. We’ll be ready to go."
The bill, drafted by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal and with 85 co-sponsors in the Senate, authorises Trump to impose secondary tariffs of at least 500 per cent on imports from countries such as China, Brazil and India that still trade with Russia.
Thune suggested that Trump's threat means the Senate will no longer need to pass the Graham-Blumenthal bill.
"We are going to try as best we can ... coordinate strategies with the White House, obviously with the House," Thune said.
Action in the House of Representatives also appeared unlikely following Trump's statements. Asked whether sanctions legislation would emerge before the House adjourns for summer recess at the end of this month, Majority Leader Steve Scalise said: "Not right now".

All you have to do is follow his posting pattern. It is strange but consistent.
I also repeal my request for Cope to be banned. He is too entertaining.

I think for the most part people have been sticking to war news and the thread is going better so far.

Well it looks like the pushback has already started on the 5% spending on Nato by some of the European "allies".
These socialist welfare lovers will never meet that goal or if they do they will cook the books to do it. Some of them are already counting public works projects as defense spending.
European defense is a farce.

If they spend 5% on defense, how are they going to pay to import the third world to take over their countries?

-war with Russia without US casualties
-erode Russia's global standing
Are any of these bad things?
When you consider this in light of our competition with China, its telling Russia the price of being Hostile to NATO.
In a vacuum? Of course not.
The cost here, if there is/was some path to stop the war at a cost that would likely be uncomfortable for Ukraine, is hundreds of thousands of human lives though.
I think there probably is (or was) some kind of deal where we could get Russia to stop, though I'm not going to pretend that is definitely the case (like some here will do in saying there definitely wasn't an offramp, despite no way of actually knowing that).
But if there wasn't, then I guess we might as well take advantage of the situation.

Any government over there that proposes cutting their social welfare benefits will be ran out of town on a rail. They will riot in the streets.
These people are not serious regarding defense.
And their "immigrants" are immediately put on those benefits.

We are likely to have a bunch of old cruise missiles aging out that are guided by terrain rather than GPS. Ukraine could dispose of them for us.

Other than 12 Patriot batteries (not just missiles) Trump is holding the cards very close to his chest on what is being sent. The Patriot batteries can be deployed in places other than cities now. This makes them offensive weapons able to shoot down Russian jets well beyond the front lines.
"Standing for the Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target, the Patriot's batteries consist of eight launchers, each with the capacity to fire four missiles.
The system can track 100 threats from 60 miles away and its missiles cost $3m each and, despite having a long range, they are not primarily designed to defend entire cities."
That might push those glide bomb launches away from effective range.

4 mile range, but looks good to protect high value targets.

Hey everyone! I just thought I'd pop in to get Lord Bebo and ayden's thoughts about the new $10 billion in weapons that Ukraine is getting, but I don't see them anywhere.
