Some people can.

Landry is not one of them.

What repairs are going to be taxed?

A roof? Renovating your own home?

This choice is stupid as hell.

Are everyday consumers going to be taxed because they need to buy materials to improve their homes?

That loud sucking sound you hear are people fleeing to other states because of this dumb shite.

Wouldn’t he just be referring to people saving money on the income tax will now use the extra money on items like car washes and home repairs? Therefore more tax money generated.

That would just be replacing one tax with another. You don't save in the long run.

Trying to eliminate the income tax just means that he's about to blow a hole in the state's budget, give a huge windfall to those who are wealthy, and shift more tax burden to working people.

I’m glad to see Landry is moving forward on vital reforms. La. needs to change the way we do business.

What?

If I pay 10K a year in income tax, but under the new plan I get to keep that 10K and spend it on luxury items, there would need to be a 100% sales tax rate to even generate the same revenue

Like it says it’s taxing choices not income. Lost tax revenue from no state tax can be partially returned in the form of services used or items purchased. People with the now extra money might do something or buy something they wouldn’t have before.

But you said it would create more taxes, it wouldn't

This is a good thing, taxes are too high already and feed the excessive state spending. The state should have to spend wisely just like its citizens. Giving the Louisiana Department of Revenue part of everyone's paycheck is the source of the excessive spending.

FYI the personal income tax compromises less than 10% of the state budget, so setting that number to zero still leaves 90%+ of existing revenue, (current budget is ~$500 million) We've all had to deal with real spending cuts in our personal lives, imposing the same restraint on the state is reasonable.

Especially when every state around Louisiana is getting rid of income tax or has none already, you don't want to be less competitive economically.

I don't understand why the reduced income tax collection has to be replaced with higher taxes on other things in the first place; "revenue neutral" only keeps up the largesse. Just remove the income tax and budget accordingly with ~90% of existing because the income tax is so miniscule relative to other tax revenue.

They're not eliminating it. Nelson's plan involves a flat 3% tax instead of stepped tax rate.

quote:

If Louisiana’s personal income tax rate was in the low 3% range for all households, as Nelson wishes, it would create an income tax break for moderate and higher-income people. Currently, individuals pay a 4.25% tax rate on income $50,000 and above, 3.5% on income between $12,500 and $50,000, and 1.85% rate on income $12,500 and below.

But also raising the standard deduction so low income earners get screwed over a little less.

I haven't had time to research, some in this thread are saying eliminate income tax, now you're saying reduce. And to make up for that they will just increase sale taxes on other goods and services.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul. The same people will be footing the bill.

How about we fix the glut in the state budget and eliminate income tax completely? Probably more important to score political points

Digging into this as we type.

First take is that this looks great, but as always the devil is in the details.

Will add more when I know more.

Just going by what Nelson said a week ago. Though the official plan that was supposed to be sent to legislators may say different.
