Los Angeles County is finalizing plans for a pilot project in congestion pricing that could see drivers charged an additional fee to use certain high-frequency routes on freeways, in a bid to reduce traffic in the congested city.

The Los Angeles Times reports:
quote:

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is expected by the summer to release a long-awaited study that will offer a blueprint for a congestion pricing scheme similar to ones in cities such as London, Stockholm and Singapore, where commuters pay to drive in city centers.

The transit agency has zeroed in on three locations for a possible test program: a nearly 16-mile stretch of the 10 Freeway between downtown and Santa Monica, arterial streets and freeways around downtown and the canyon streets and freeways that connect the San Fernando Valley to the L.A. Basin.

As Breitbart News reported in 2017, Los Angeles is considered to have the worst traffic in the world, though drivers in other cities spend more time in traffic than even L.A. drivers do, according to other studies.

New York is also planning to use congestion pricing to ease traffic into Manhattan, though the launch of the new plan has been delayed until late 2024 — right around the time of the next state legislative elections.

Similar projects in other cities have met with mixed success, and have often been rejected by residents. There are various different types of congestion pricing, including charges for preferred lanes, or to enter an area.

You can steal up to $950 and not be prosecuted.

Driving on a highway you've already paid taxes for? Pft, open up your wallet!

Edit: Honestly, good for those dumbfricks. I hope shite gets worse for them...

The problem is these socialist policies do not stay in that state. They will spread to the other states. Gov't loves itself some power and money

They have 'for fee' express lanes all over Texas.

Yes. Taxing people for using the freeways is going to clear up city traffic.

Good Lord.

Gotta pay for those "no harm" addiction programs somehow (the ones that give out free needles, crack pipes, etc).

Yes we do. But - everywhere there is a paid lane (either express or toll road) there is a frontage road that is free. You just have to deal with the lights and or heavier traffic.

The paid roads in DFW are for convenience, not really traffic control.

I used to drive the 405 from El Segundo to Encino 5 days a week and that would be an upcharge according to the article.

frick that noise. I hated every single minute on the 405 and 101. If I had to pay extra for that miserable commute, I would have gone postal.

I live in LA and it sucks here for many reasons, but what's the gotcha (political or otherwise)? Shocker, metro traffic is bad everywhere.

There are toll roads throughout the country, including Florida.

The fux up here in Washington state want to tax drivers either via a chip installed or getting your odometer checked.

Taxed to build the roads
Taxed to purchase the vehicle
Taxed for plates
Taxed for annual registration
Taxed for the fuel
Taxed again for using them

Discrimination. Poor people should go sit on the road in protest and deny the rich folks from going to their high paying jobs. Then set up additional toll booths to get their fair share. Voluntary reparations donations could be collected here to help ward off getting your car keyed by accident.

Apparently you have a right to “free” roads.

the road was paid for using taxpayer dollars to be able to drive on at no additional charge. Taxes take care of maintenance. Charging to drive on a road you and everyone else already paid for? frick that.
