This is one of those cases where it's so easy to show the video, provide a summary of the event, and summarily declare the assailant guilty.

For sure, there needs to be accountability, but there is more to the story. According to his adoptive (white) mom, the kid has struggled with a number of mental issues his whole life, including autism, ADHD, etc.

It's easy to just say the parents failed and the kid should face consequences. I think the parents should have been more aware of and eager to change the reward system the school used. For the kid, though, should those consequences be 30 years in prison?

The mom's side of the story.

quote:

Although I was hesitant about Brendan attending a public school due to his triggers, I was partially reassured by the IEP process. What I didn’t realize was that while the Behavioral Plan looked good on paper, it would prove very difficult to follow in practice.

There was a reward system in place for students to manage their behavior. The team’s IEP plan consisted of using a token economy. This allowed the students to purchase items out of the closet after delaying gratification, by building up the number of tokens.

But somehow the reward system shifted from the approved plan to utilizing or perhaps misapplying one of Brendan’s known triggers. This year’s teacher changed the overall reward system to allow students to access their electronics once they were done with their work. Most likely not realizing that his teacher was going against Brendan’s IEP, the teacher requested that Brendan’s Nintendo Switch be sent into school daily.

The group home’s behavioral analyst reluctantly and prematurely went along with this request. It was premature, because the IEP team had not been consulted. The teacher stipulated that the game was kept locked up and only given to Brendan at the end of the day, during an empty period.

It's sad but the kid should have been institutionalized

Liberals have such a warped understanding of the victim/perpetrator/hero relationship. I think it’s because they always see themselves as the hero, when in fact they are the perpetrator (i.e. ‘white-knighting’). And I think they project that warped perspective to these types of situations and make the perpetrator the hero (meant to say victim).

He won't be required to do the full 30 years unless he chooses to, but what else do you suggest for a violent animal that has never been under control during it's lifetime?

The 30 years is nothing more than a safety net in the case that the beast can't act like a human long enough to get an early release. In the case it does what it always does, you have the position locked in to protect innocent victims as long as possible.

You are what your record says you are.. in this case it's an unmanageable threat to society.

So I guess we should just wait until he kills someone before we put him away.

Nah. He's damaged goods. The 6'6", 270lb. "kid" put her in the hospital.

Another gentle giant unfairly imprisoned I guess.

For some, it’s too sad to accept that some people are irredeemable. Instead, when faced with that reality it’s easier to think that the person is a victim and if only everyone else was different things would be ok.

The truth is that this kid is a murder waiting to happen. It doesn’t matter what the cause is.

Exactly. Society, shouldn't have to walk on eggshells around certain people just because they had a shitty childhood. Yeah, it sucks. But life isn't fair. Let's not leave women and children vulnerable to attacks by maladjusted people because we feel sorry for them.

It's like some people think we should deploy special handlers around him ready with violins and blowguns with tranquilizers in case he freaks out. "He's more afraid of you than you are of him. Don't move"!

Insane asylum for him for the rest of his life. He was born retarded and now very large and violent. He should not walk among us. Hate it for him and his family, but thems the breaks.

So it’s the teacher’s fault for not letting little Brendan have his Nintendo until the end of the day? Am I reading this BS correctly?

“Oh no! but what’s going to happen to him after prison? How will he be rehabilitated and thrusted back into society as a valuable citizen?”

IDGAF he needs to pay the price. That’s our problem. We look too far into the “root” of the problem and make up bullshite to skirt around the fact that HE KNOWS RIGHT FROM WRONG and he made a bad decision and should pay for it.

The only question is "Did the kid assault the teacher?" It does not matter why he did it. Actions have consequences.

Has to be consequences. Even a mentally Ill person will not put his hand in fire cause of the consequence. When he is in prison he needs to be reminded why he is there. He will put the two together.

LoL yeah let's blame the old woman beaten to a pulp. Let's pretend these kids are like wild animals with zero impulse control and that we need to adapt to their most primal instincts. The teacher was asking for it. Didn't she know his triggers?
