White liberals know how racist other people are and want to make sure everyone knows who the racists are, and it is never them...
I lived in Oregon from 2013 through 2019, and I had several occasions where white liberals (including my cousin, who is pretty neutral on politics) asked me about how racist the deep south really was. They were looking for me to confirm their already established opinions of southern whites. They wanted the inside scoop from someone who spent most of their life in the south.
I always disappointed them. I told the the places with the most systemic racism that I knew of were the Indian Reservations in the Northwest. They don't really think about those - at all.
