A quick read up on Dier Ez Zor says that it is the provincial capitol and home to the country’s refining industry.
References in the Russian communications to “the plant” implies they were trying to capture the refinery and the US was camped out there to protect it.

I think that Russia promised a 25% cut to forces that take oil infrastructure. I’ve seen people referring to an oil processing plant in the area. Seems to be a plausible explanation for Wagner’s actions.

Isn't it fricking awesome when you don't telegraph to the world what you're going to do a month before you do it?
My God that lanky legged half breed homo was such a damn amateur.

It wasn’t just that.
He also talked a lot of shite and didn’t want to back it up, with regards to “red lines” and so forth.
The current military appears to be following the old Teddy Roosevelt motto of “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”

We need to get the hell out of Syria.
Yes let’s collude with Putin to make Russia stronger.
I’m sure that will make us safer.
Perhaps you wish to take your stand in your front yard after my house is on fire and my family dead.
Let’s see how many isolationist downvotes I can get.

It’s written from such a weird perspective. A lot of complaining and glass half empty ness since Trump is President.

The Syrian government and its ally Iran have repeatedly called for U.S. troops to leave Syria now that the fight against the Islamic State is nearly over, and they have regularly threatened to wage war to push the Americans out if they do not leave.
However, the Trump administration announced a new Syria strategy last month under which U.S. troops will remain in northeastern Syria until there is a peace settlement regarding the wider war that includes a transition away from the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.
With no sign of such a peace deal in sight, the U.S. military is now committed to a potentially indefinite presence in Syria that is opposed by all of the main players in the country.
The prospect that U.S. troops will remain in Syria while shoring up Kurdish efforts to secure self-rule has provoked a convergence among countries opposed to any form of Kurdish autonomy, uniting Turkey, Russia, Iran and the Syrian government in a de facto alliance against the U.S. presence.
that whole article is basically implying that we shouldn't be there, after we kill a Russian offensive, and i bet the author believes that Trump colluded with Russia and may be actively blackmailed by Russia. total clarity

Hopefully a similar result will occur when Turkey tries to take Manjib with their jihadist proxies from our SDF allies.

That’s a real crowd of winners there.
Two members of the Axis Of Evil, an aspiring member in Turkey, and Russia trying to reclaim its old Soviet glory.

Finally we have a leader who will not abandon the Kurds. Some of the best people I've lived around.

It was a message to Russia and Turkey. Turkey started to attack Kurdish positions because thy feel threatened. I think this was also a message to Erdogan that we will protect our interest and allies at your demise.

Plausible deniability by the Russian's. Of course, the Kremlin knew of the situation, reportedly Spetsnaz "advisors" were among the mix.
Russians serving as mercenaries is "illegal" in Russia, wink, wink.
The Kremlin does this to hide Russian casualties in Syria.
Zinky Boys is a very bad thing to the Russian population after Afghanistan.
