Kennedy touted his pro-gun rights bona fides in criticizing the bill but saved most of his fire for federal and state bureaucrats. The Louisiana Republican repeatedly called Kelley and other mass-shooters "idiots" and said the country doesn't "need more gun control — we need more idiot control."

Republican Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Tim Scott of South Carolina are sponsoring the bill along with Democratic Sens. Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, both of Connecticut. The bill's provisions are aimed at strengthening the National Instant Background Check System by offering bonuses to federal agencies that provide information to the system and grants for states to upload information.

Can someone explain why stricter background checks would be a bad deal for the country?

There already is a criminal background check in place. Also, who determines how extensive a new background check will be? Partisan hacks like yourself? No thanks.

How could they be stricter than they are now? What would you like to see added?

What do stricter background checks do but make it harder for law abiding citizens to purchase guns? Criminals who want a gun aren’t going to suddenly not be able to buy one on the street or steal them as they are already doing.

Can you tell me which mass shooting it would have prevented?

How do you define "obsession"? Is there any other Constitutional right that you find "obsessive"?

So we can't even require an ID that is provided at no cost before voting, but we require an elaborate scheme to purchase a firearm. One day, the Supreme Court is going to question why circuit courts are treating these fundamental rights differently.

As long as you and those like you just keep on not understanding it’s all good.

How bad can it be if Cornyn is co-sponsoring? He’s a Republican from Texas for god’s sake

Sure, as soon as you can assure me that strict background checks won't be abused.

I don't think the proposal is crazy on its face, the question is how much will this do to curb gun violence? None of the mass shootings would've been prevented by this plus it is incredibly easy for criminals to buy guns off of the street.

Can you explain why it's so hard for you to spend 10 minutes researching a topic before posting about it? It's simple, this has nothing to do with making the NICS "stricter". Democrats, as usual with their uneducated way of thinking, are tacking on something to this bill that is already Federal law. They are also seeking to expand the definition of persons who can be prohibited from purchasing a firearm through a FFL dealer (which is also legally the same as barring ownership in absolute terms) without messing around with the concept of due process. You know what due process is right?

Additional imposition on free persons to exercise their Constitutional rights while doing little to nothing to prevent actual crimes.

Most crimes are committed by firearms that were either stolen or bought on the black market, acquired by family or friends (gifted, borrowed, or stolen), or bought legally prior to a disqualifying offense. When most of the crime committed won't be stopped by the legislation, you're looking at a mostly useless bill that just puts additional barriers and wait times on citizens exercising their rights.

Yeah, I'm always of the opinion that increasing meaningless bureaucracy under the guise of 'needing to do something' is pretty much always worse than just doing nothing.

You don't value freedom or have a healthy respect for evil in this world, so yeah, you don't understand why people would be "obsessed" (we aren't) with guns.
