It’s extremely difficult for an elderly person to recover from a fall

The body can’t recover like it used to. Perfectly healthy elderly people will fall and never be the same afterwards. And RGB wasn’t perfectly healthy to begin with. The body starts to shut down and there’s nothing you can do. Falls are terrible and absolute killers.

She can probably be kept alive though even if she never sets foot in SCOTUS chambers again

My grandmother, who was in good shape, fell 2 weeks ago and broke her hip. She is now day to day.

I feel sorry for her. You know she just wants to retire and relax in her last days but her handlers are basically forcing her to keep working. I think a social worker needs to check up on her situation. Maybe even get the law involved. I would be furious if my grandmother were being treated that way.

Breaking ribs is painfully taxing on a perfectly healthy person. On an 80 yr old? I don’t see those ribs healing anytime soon. Hard to sit. Hard to breath. Significant risk of fluid in the lungs.

I had cracked ribs once....and it happened when i had bronchitis. Freaking miserable...docs can't do anything, and when ever i coughed it was excruciating pain. All i could do was grab a bed sheet and tie it around my torso to keep the cough from causing the fractures to flex.

The immobilization for her could cause some pneumonia to set in...

That’s what finally did my grandfather in. He had late stage Alzheimers, but was maintaining, then he fell and was hurt pretty good. That totally disrupted his status ... was gone within two weeks.

Side note: Dementia is a shite way to go, for anyone. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemies.

But yes, at that age you’re already dancing on the edge of a cliff.

Not wishing RBG any illness, but it is highly likely that this could either physically do her in or influence her into retirement.

I just hope this board doesn’t celebrate her passing like so many liberals did when Scalia died

Happens all the time. It messes with their mind.

Which might not be a bad thing in this case.

At 81 mine still mowed her lawn. Spunkiest old lady you'd ever meet.

She fell off a ladder putting ornaments on a Christmas tree and broke her hip and some ribs.

She pretty much never got out of a bed again until she passed away a year later. Went from an energizer bunny to weeping when she had to slightly sit up in bed.

I'm sure everyone here has a similar story or two.

Truly sorry to hear this. I hope all turns out for the best.

Same happened to my grandmother a few years back. She was already failing from Alzheimer's, but otherwise physically in great form. She fell and broke hip and that was it. Iirc, it was four days in the hospital before she passed. But she was 90, so she had a great, full life.

My graddad fell in September and broke three ribs. Otherwise, he was in good health for someone in advanced age. He ended up passing away in early October. He was 91.

She can't stay awake for oral arguments now.

It will continue to get more difficult for her
