Wasn't this one of the goals of the MAGA camp though? To dramatically reduce the size of government?
The board didn't seem to care about this when Elon Musk wielded a chainsaw and eliminated tens of thousands of federal jobs. In fact, Americans in need of a paycheck losing their jobs was celebrated. This is such a strange place.

I don’t want people to go hungry, but I stopped at Walmart on my way to a tailgate this weekend and I didn’t even recognize the store with snap shutdown.

It was clear from the beginning that the democrats in congress did not want a shutdown at all, but leaders like Schumer felt they had to throw raw meat to their base. We all knew that as soon as the elections were over, and the base had voted, they would end the shutdown. So it depends on what you mean by “democrats”. Their base? Yeah, they wanted it to go on. The congressmen? No, they wanted it over before it began.
