I’m still completely baffled that in 2024 people are carrying around pagers. Do they operate on encrypted frequencies or something else that gives them an advantage over just a regular cellphone?

In 2019, I met a guy who was an executive with WIX who told me they were basically a front company for the Mossad and that most governments carry out espionage through shell companies.

It was surprising to learn at the time but it seems to be pretty much out in the open now.

even unenhanced pagers act as an "ad hoc" burst receiver. A short signal is sent, the pager only receives (no two way to establish a link and geolocate).

That also makes it easier to enhance from there. With simple changes you can tell it to, for example, instead of vibrate give a certain codeword. Or vibrate in a different pattern, which the reciever knows means X or Y.

Because they are short busts of commands going out it is then easier to encrypt, or it least change the encryption (which you do every so often as SOP anyway) if you suspect it has been deciphered. Which is also its weakness- it is easy to decipher. So as the sender it has to be very simple and just a first step in a communication process.

For example, even if Israelis have decipered it:
Vibrate pattern = meet courier at Loc. 3.
At location 3 you meet a courier with a one time cipher pad with more complicated instructions.

The weakness, why Mossad was monitoring such meaningless signals, is because it was an indicator that activity was initiated. You could then launch a drone to watch for launches, send a water borne patrol to catch a rocket smuggling operation, or trigger a field team to try and identify that courier with his one-time pad.

But they had an even better idea- blow their dicks and hands off.

ETA: if you were to walk into the basement of Langley, the E-Ring of the Pentagon, or the best looking offices at Quantico (counterintel) you will see people with suits and a pager on the belt. No phone. Phones are not allowed in SCIFs or secured areas, but they still have to be able to be contacted.

I’m not up on how many were injured or what intel they gathered from it.

I suppose the collateral damage is that Hez doesn’t know a safe way to communicate anymore.
