U.N. Warns Israel: Retaliatory Siege of Gaza ‘Prohibited’ Under International Law

Israel’s act of self defense in laying siege to Hamas terrorists and their supporters in the Gaza Strip was declared a “prohibited” act Tuesday by the U.N. human rights chief.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, issued a call for peace and understanding in the region from his office in Geneva, Switzerland, before admonishing any prospective retaliatory move by Israel against its Islamic attackers. He cautioned:

quote:
The imposition of sieges that endanger the lives of civilians by depriving them of goods essential for their survival is prohibited under international humanitarian law

Any restrictions on the movement of people and goods to implement a siege must be justified by military necessity or may otherwise amount to collective punishment.

UPDATE: The BBC is not backing down after coming under political pressure to refer to Hamas as a terror group. It has rejected a call from the government to review its editorial guidelines.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We always take our use of language very seriously. Anyone watching or listening to our coverage will hear the word ‘terrorist’ used many times – we attribute it to those who are using it, for example, the UK government. This is an approach that has been used for decades, and is in line with that of other broadcasters. The BBC is an editorially independent broadcaster whose job is to explain precisely what is happening ‘on the ground’ so our audiences can make their own judgement.”

Mortars were fired from Syria towards the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Now this starts the war

The evolution generally goes something like:

-Israel has a right to defend itself
-Israel has a responsibility to ensure the safety of its people
-Israel is starting to fight back
-Israel should commit to a tempered, even-handed approach
-Israel doesn't need to push into Gaza/West Bank
-How long until Israelis feel they are safe?
-The war is starting to take a toll on Israeli families
-The horrors of what's happening in Gaza/West Bank to "innocent civilians"
-Israel should show restraint/proportional response
-We call on Israel to withdraw from occupied territories and start pursuing for peace

I was thinking it would be a couple of weeks before we got to this point yet now the UN is already about halfway down the list.

Was watching the female reporter covering it on the ground on i24, she did a good job keeping it together but you could tell she was deeply shaken. Will probably have PTSD.

In regards to them saying that German girl is still alive..

She dead, but giving her family hope, just for them to say she was alive until Israel killed her in an air strike or died because she couldn’t get medical care because of Israel

Can see it coming from a mile away

There is no way Israel backs off this time.

They will broadcast every gruesome scene if they have to to show the world what was done.

But they will level Hamas. They will not stop. Mossad agents are out right now planning assassinations I guarantee it.

I'm curious about the American hostages. Are they dual citizens, tourists, etc. This administration obviously won't play hardball to get them back.

Probably a mix.

The rave that got hit was a “peace festival” with people from throughout the world in attendance.

Countries like China had people who got caught up in this and I doubt there are a lot of Chinese Jews.

Near Gaza, it seems to be mostly people visiting family, at least that seems to be a consistent theme in the feed I've been watching from the Times of Israel. Except for the beach at Ashkelon, I don't know why a tourist would be in the incursion area unless they were driving to get to Eilat from Tel Aviv.

ETA: Obviously other than the hippie festival, of course.
