I think some Republicans worry that not having one Dem district would put 2 seats at risk potentially. If it were me, I’d go 6-0 though.

At least make the sixth district a 50/50 prospect

I would take 5-1 if it's 5 safe seats.

5-1 is the way to go. New Orleans is going to always put one seat at risk. Might as well give that one up and keep everything else safe. If other states freely give up Republican seats, that's on them. Louisiana can't make up for what California does, there's no point in fighting it.

Aren't there too many democrats in New Orleans to ever have a 6-0 map?

If you put it with the surrounding parishes…probably not.

Ditto BR.

That being said, a moderate Dem has appeal south of the Lake.

It is a risky proposition.

Still, at worst it is 4-2 (what we were), at best 6-0.

5-1 is the safe play.

No, we could draw 2 R+17 districts around the New Orleans area. I feel like a +17 advantage should be sufficient but I see the arguments on the other side.

I want to see us draw maps that make sense regionally. If that is 6-0, great. If that’s 5-1, that’s fine too.

5-1 would have to racially gerrymander a district along the Mississippi River from BR to NOLA. 6-0 would draw normal and regionally centric districts.

I agree with this- plus I do not in any way shape or form want to risk anyone from New Orleans (white/black/democrat/republican) representing me in Congress.

New Orleans doesn’t think the rest of the state exists and thinks it is entitled to some special status in all manner of state and local government. We may as well keep all of its government officials from infecting the rest of us.

There's going to come a time when New Orleans isn't big enough to have it's own representation and that seat will flip on it's own as the metro area overtakes it.

5-1 will be easier to defend, the 6-0. I believe state will go with 5-1.

The problem is that we would have to draw a district based on race to do 5-1 which SCOTUS said you can’t do.

New Orleans simply has too much Democrat support, it would need to be gerrymandered to a challengeable extent to get a 6-0 map.

Makes sense.

Could wind up with 4 red and 2 purple.

We could easily go 6-0. I don’t think it happens immediately though. We will probably go back to 5-1 for now. If dem states push the envelope we will go 6-0 in response.
