An injured U.S. Secret Service officer fired five shots at a gunman who was allegedly attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump during an attack on the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner Saturday evening.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the officer was struck by a firearm in the chest but was protected by a ballistic vest and returned fire five times, before the 31-year-old suspect Cole Tomas Allen fell to the ground.

quote:

“One Secret Service officer was shot in the chest, but was wearing a ballistic vest that worked,” Blanche said during a press conference Monday afternoon. “This heroic officer who was hit fired five times at Allen, who was not shot, but fell to the ground and was promptly arrested.”

Blanche said that investigators believe Allen discharged his shotgun during the encounter, though ballistics analysis remains ongoing. Security footage released to the public shows additional agents rushing toward the checkpoint with weapons drawn in the immediate aftermath of the gunfire.

quote:

The acting attorney general at times added confusing details to his remarks about the attack, saying at one point that Allen was “tackled” despite the criminal complaint saying he fell. Blanche insisted “both can be true,” but that he would defer to the sworn complaint for “precision.”

Officials also have not yet explained why no other officers appear to have fired or why the shots fired at Allen did not strike him, but Blanche’s account indicates the rounds came from the wounded officer, a factor that could possibly help explain the missed shots.

I have a feeling the final action report is not going to be particularly kind to those agents and officers involved.

The agent fired 5 shots and didn't hit the guy. NBC reported tonight that agents fired a total of 8 shots and no hit. Agents need a lot of range time.

He wasn't the only agent in the area. He was the only one to appropriately react it seems

If Cole doesn't fall, how much farther does he get?

One news report I just saw said the officer who was shot fired five rounds.

There's also so,we confusion as to whether the perpetrators fell or was tackled. Sounds like a combination of both.

The actual affidavit only mentions the 5 rounds from the hit officer, not saying there aren't more but that's all they put. And like the article said, the official document says "fell"

quote:

13. At approximately 8:40 p.m., ALLEN approached a security checkpoint on the Terrace Level of the hotel leading to the location of the dinner. ALLEN approached and ran through the magnetometer holding a long gun. As he did so, U.S. Secret Service personnel assigned to the checkpoint heard a loud gunshot. U.S. Secret Service Officer V.G. was shot once in the chest; Officer V.G. was wearing a ballistic vest at the time.

14. Officer V.G. drew his service weapon and fired multiple times at ALLEN, who eventually fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries but was not shot. ALLEN was subsequently arrested.

15. At the time of his arrest, ALLEN was in possession of a 12-gauge pump action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38 caliber pistol on his person.

Yeah just going by the press conference he said five rounds fire no hit all by the guy that took a round.

Shooter fell and that's when they got him.

5 shots in a crowded room and he didn’t even hit the guy…

Seems pretty dangerous to me.

I guess I can forgive a guy who’s just been shot in the chest/vest for missing a couple of shots.

I’m sure he was probably temporarily disabled after taking a slug to the chest.

Injured Secret Service agent fired five shots at Cole during Trump assassination attempt
By Kaelan Deese
1.
quote:

An injury is broad, encompassing any physical damage to the body (e.g., broken bone, burn). A wound is a specific type of injury that causes a break in the skin or tissues (e.g., cut, puncture, abrasion), often resulting in bleeding. While all wounds are injuries, not all injuries are wounds.

"Injure" often refers to accidents or mishaps, while "wound" can imply intentional harm (e.g., in battle or attacks)
2. Why is he referred to by the familiarly cozy "Cole"?

Me too. It looks highly possible that this was friendly fire (or however you say that in law enforcement). I believe that the between the lines reading of

quote:

the officer was struck by a firearm in the chest

says so. He did not say shot by the suspect.

I'm less concerned that this guy wasn't hit than I am about the fact that there seem to have been no agents posted near the hotel elevators, in lobbies, or any other common spaces this guy would have come through. One would think that a guy dressed (or undressed) as oddly as he was and carrying a shotgun...even if he was trying to hide it...would have attracted attention before he even got to the first checkpoint.

Did it never cross the minds of Secret Service leadership that a threat could actually be a registered guest?

Check all the registered guests. A single male who only checks in the night before and books one night would be suspicious. How did those arrive? Shouldn't take that long to discover how those arrived in DC. A guy traveling cross country by train from California should definitely get a knock on his door by Secret Service.
