So I was doing some research about welfare & this “Big Government” state we find the country in. Welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, Food Stamps, etc. I’m conservative & want small government. I don’t mind a small safety net. The far left is pushing universal health care & cradle to grave entitlements. I always shot down that idea fast in my head by saying that’s not in the constitution.

Though, look at Artcile I Section 8 in the constitution, “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States”

Provide general welfare of the US. Crap! So how do I maintain my argument all these years of, it’s not in the constitution, therefore, it’s not constitutional?

The enumerated powers define what the fed is allowed to do to provide for the general welfare.

Scotus is retarded and the massive debt in this country lays at their feet.

There is no way to reconcile the current state of the federal government to the constitution

Welfare as you know it didnt exist at the time. I can make up any term and shoehorn it into the constitution if I am playing loose with the terminology.

General welfare of the United States. I don't think the founding fathers envisioned the welfare state when they wrote this,it's in the context of the federal government's obligations to the states, not entitlements to the individual citizens.

Judge Breyer just wrote a book and in it, he wrote "Why I Chose Pragmatism, not Textualism."

He's basically admitting that the libs just do what they want.

Hence, the absence of the word "citizen(s)". But he's trying his best to convince us.

You need to know how term were used at the time. Just like "regulated" in the 2A, "general welfare" doesn't mean what it does today. At the time "general welfare" did not mean "pay my personal expenses and utility bills".

The chances this is true are less than zero.

It’s so illuminating that liberals don’t realize that the people they are trying to fool are smarter than they are and see through them within seconds.

Based on Article 1, Section 8.. the current entitlement system is detrimental to the general welfare of the United States and Congress has abdicated it's duties.

I would have more of a crisis of conscience over using lithium ion batteries than wanting the welfare state to end.

You don't know the meaning of the phrase 'general welfare'.

Had he said "and own lots of guns" it would have hit the Prog trifecta.

Does it say "provide" or "promote" = my memory is 'promote'

but either way - 'welfare' did not have today's meaning then -

Then it was more of enhancing a societal structure that promotes moral happiness and self-interest - not giving everyone a feather bed to lay about all day.

Do you know welfare and or food stamps do not provide tax dollars for any city or county revenue? Sometimes we wonder why our streets are not paved or trashy roads. A good part of it is from a no tax welfare system.

This attitude is what was used to infect and overrun any kind of 'conservative' movement. You cannot give government a single millimeter. If you do, you will provide them the foot hold to your destruction.

So don't take Medicare.....and absolutely reject any Social Srcurity payments for yourself.

Make a stand, man. Show your principles.

Ya dude you don't know me. I guarantee you I'm smaller government than you. So much so that I'm asking a question as to how I can win arguments against libs on maintaining my small government perspective. And also win them to our side.
