Fifteen or so years ago I purchased a Dental Practice from Guatemalan immigrant. He had quite a few hispanic patients that sought emergency care from him since he was fluent in Spanish.

I was fortunate enough to have a hold over staff member that was bilingual and would act as an interpreter so I could treat them effectively. After a period of time the staff member moved on and my hispanic patient base dwindled, except for this one family.

Angel, a twelve year old hispanic boy, would bring in his family (parents, aunts and uncles etc.) and act as an interpreter since he was bilingual. On one visit, in particular, I spoke to Angel and asked him why he didn't teach his family how to speak English. He said that he had asked them before if they would like to learn English, and they flat out refused.

Even stressing how learning English would improve their lives (ever notice what they call the Hispanic crew member on the job site who speaks English--"Hefe") didn't impress him at all. They just flat out refused to learn our language.

I thought that they were just being hard headed until recently. I sold my house faster than I expected and needed to find a condo to move into fast. I found a condo and hired a legal immigrant to renovate it, his crew of course did not speak English. I would check in on the project frequently to stay on them so that the job would be complete in time for me to move. I used google translate to communicate with the workers and they would look at the screen and nod si' and smile .

I would follow up with the boss when he was available, and in a few instances, the workers would do the opposite of what I wanted. Then it occurred to me, they can't read their own language. When I would show them the screen on my phone, they were hiding the fact that they were illiterate and just smile like they understood.

While I admire their work ethic and family focus, they will never assimilate into the American culture because of their illiteracy. This also explains why the Democrat Politicians want open borders, a continuous influx of more dumb voters that will believe all their lies and vote exactly as told.

I don't really agree with you. My wife is 100% Italian and second generation in America. Her grandmother never learned English but thrived in a community in Pittsburgh where Italian was spoken. My wife's ancestors were illiterate coal miners and laborers. But that strain generated second generation dentists, business owners, chemists and PhD electrical engineers. The progeny of those who worked on your project will assimilate. The country is changing but they will assimilate.

it used to be a different world. One without safety nets and you didn’t have the option to sit comfortably on your arse and do nothing.

Our bloated social programs and politicians dedicated to enabling these aliens are the biggest problem.

Italians, Germans, Irish etc all come from the same European family. They all wanted to assimilate and were close enough culturally and genetically to do that.

Migration from the global south is a reconquista. You are expected to tolerate and accommodate them and all other cultures legal and illegal.

Mexican immigrant second generations commit far more crimes than the parents.

Parents come here to actually work in some cases though most are here for the gibs. The second gen learns to hate Whitey and join gangs.

We will have to learn to speak and read Spanish, and they still won’t be able to read it. Que lastima.

Sounds like Angel has assimilated just fine.

All of our ancestors take a couple of generations to assimilate.

It’s true though, the kids will assimilate. Learning a new language is daunting for adults. Some do it, many don’t but their kids always learn English. Now if we’re at a point where English isn’t being learned by the kids then it’s a problem.

Think about being a schoolteacher in Texas having to cater to wets who can't speak or read English, then the bureaucratic answer is to teach them in Spanish indefinitely until they learn English (but they are illiterate in Spanish, too).

Texas schools have been known to hire teachers from Spain to teach Mexicans. The Mexicans can't understand them. The politicians and judges have made a mockery of the public school system.

This is strange. I just went to the USCIS website and one of the numerous requirements was they must read write and speak basic English to gain US citizenship.

What the frick, if they can't meet all the requirements why are they not sent back to their own country?

Silly me... I thought laws were supposed to be followed or there were consequences.

One thing I've never heard remedied is why the areas around the borders are such shitholes. Those areas include immigrants who've been here for generations yet conditions continue to deteriorate.

Has that ever been enforced? It would certainly slow legal immigration.

My best friend came from Korea when he was a kid. He is “ultra American” as in he loves Garth Brooks and football and owns a small business. His parents will never learn English. But they don’t rely on the government teat so it’s their business what language they want to speak.

I don't think I necessarily agree. Their kids will be literate, learn English, and become part of American society.

I had a great grand parent from Italy that straight up refused to learn English but that was "neat".
