Illinois Bill Would Let Failing School System Send Homeschooling Parents To Jail
A new bill requires parents to report themselves to their local school district, and parents who do not will be considered truant.
Homeschool parents would face fines, misdemeanor charges and even jail time if they do not report themselves to local public school officials, under a new proposal from Illinois Democrats.
Parents also would be required to provide public school officials with a “portfolio” of their children’s work at any time, at any interval and frequency, until that portfolio meets the public school’s satisfaction.
The bill, dubbed the “Homeschool Act,” requires parents to report themselves in writing to local school officials starting in 2026. Parents who do not will be considered truant. They face Class C misdemeanor charges, which are punishable by up to 30 days in jail. They also face fines and lengthy hearings forcing them to comply with the Act. Under this proposal, parents also face investigations by state child welfare officials.

They should leave. There are red and slightly purple states all around them. If that isn't possible, make sure that every right voter gets out on election day. There are answers, but people have to get really uncomfortable to use them.

Illinois schools failing big time and they want to make sure home schooled children fail at the same rate. Winning?

In 2023, only 35.4% of Illinois public school students were proficient in reading and 27.1% in math.

In Illinois, homeschooled children generally perform at a high level academically, scoring at the 81st to 87th percentile across subjects like reading, language, math, science, and social studies, which is significantly above the U.S. public school average.

It must really suck to live in a communist state.

No thanks, we don’t need these people coming down here to muddy up our situation any.
This is clearly South/Midwest versus NE and W.
The problem is the south controls oil and gas + a lot of farming. The Midwest, farming.
The little things become more important as time ticks by much means power changes.

I am enjoying my time in Oregon, but that's mostly due to weather and demographics

It was ProPublica that led this charge after they penned an article about homeschooling

Georgia already does this. Must have LOI on file with local BOE.

The timing of this makes it feel like an attempt by Democrats to push back against Trump's elimination of the Department of Education.
Kind of a, "If you want to give the power back to the states then this is crazy shite we are going to do to conservative parents."

"These people" have been value adds in Florida. In Montana, not so much. The ones you don't want coming to your state all seem to be flocking to Montana, Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado.

Is there some problem they can point to with homeschooling parents? Is there evidence that homeschool kids are dumber than the public school kids? I highly doubt that.

There are some shitty parents who will just let a young kid quit school and call that home schooling. That's certainly not the typical home-schooler but some small degree of oversight is warranted, (though I'd expect Illinois to take it much farther than that). A standardized achievement test every two years or so should be enough to determine whether a kid is really home schooling. An outstanding score on that test should trigger an unconditional, statutory hands-off for the state. Pretty easy fix.

I seriously doubt homeschoolers are the problem. If they wanted to have students scores better they should enact penalty on parents of children in public schools.
If parents dont give a crap if their kid learns (and many feel this way) then the kid wont learn. Many parents treat schools as a baby sitter, expecting when the child turns 18 that they will get on welfare. So if the government is going to take care of all the expenses of an idiot child why would the child work to learn?
Best thing would be to either reduce a parents welfare money for bad test scores or if they arent on welfare an out right fine for the parents.

I’m pretty sure that will never stand up to judicial review. It may take a USSC ruling, but home schooling is a well established option for parents.
So much for being the party of “choice”.
