They have explained as nauseum that the baseline for evaluating accessories is whether it allows the weapon to fire automatically.

The reason for banning it is that the organization with the authority over such decisions (DoJ via ATF) has made the determination that bump stocks allow the weapon to be fired ostensibly automatically in subversion of already existing restrictions. And for essentially no other purpose.

How is that “no reason”?

Not at all, unless it’s existence is attributable solely to get around existing law.

At that point, it’s a balancing test. Something just being fun to have doesn’t hold up great when the atf presents an actual case

Lmao, it's hilarious seeing people defend this because Trump wanted it. If Obama did this, you all would be flipping your shite.

Here is why this is dangerous:

The ATF is going to "define" a bump stock as a machine gun according to your Chicago Tribune article. If that flies, then there is absolutely nothing to stop a future Justice Dept from doing the exact same thing for other firearms and accessories - AR pistols will all be defined as SBRs, pistol-grip shotguns will all be defined as SBS, or the holy grail for the left...an "assault weapon" will be outlawed or restricted in the exact same way.

I don't give two shits about bump stocks and I think they are stupid. But I will be damned if I will give the federal fricking government one inch when it comes to guns.

I said no legal reason; it's being banned purely for political reasons

The prohibition of bump stocks isn’t doing anything to your rights. It’s reclassifying an accessory whose only purpose is to abrogate existing law.

All you have to have to “abrogate” existing law is have a thumb and a belt loop.

No "boating accident" here... I actually sold mine a while back. I couldn't afford the g@#damn ammo.

Buddy paid me double what I bought it for. If I'd have known they'd actually outlaw them, I would have kept it to lose from the boat.

I do not agree with Trump about this, especially since it is a purely political decision that panders to the "gun bad" crowd...

I do have a problem with an "acting" cabinet level official, who has not received any form of confirmation by the Senate, signing regulations.

It wouldn't even be an issue if we did not have corrupt judges, legislators, and the bureaucracy that enables the corruption and tyranny.

If the 2A is to serve it's intended purpose, then the ATF has no argument, for bump stocks, automatic weapons, or anything else. Corruption, tyranny, and judicial activism are the only things allowing this kind of crap. That, and the fact that Americans are too fat and happy to throw off that yoke. If that candle is ever lit, it's Katy bar the door.

Yeah, neither were automatic weapons, suppressors, gun free zones, sawed off shotguns, 30 round magazines, vertical grips on AR pistols, background checks, requirements to buy your constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms, the list goes on and on.
