Are you genuinely concerned enough about the direction of the country to spend, say, 650k, on a property with a 50x10 underground bunker with all the filtrations, solar and thousands of dollars worth of food.

let's say the property has some acreage. with pasture land, chickens, and fruit trees, and some outbuildings but no residence. it is within an hour of your current residence.

the investment would take its hit on your retirement but it is feasible.

would you?

I would BUT, I'm not sure I wanna live in the aftermath, if truly needing a long term bunker was needed.

If I were going to waste money, I’d just throw it out the car on the interstate.

Shelter, land, and food seems like less of a waste than dumping it on the interstate regardless of where your priorities lie. but you do you.

I would in a heartbeat. Even if you just used it for hurricanes and a weekend getaway. The peace of mind having a place like that is priceless.

Ok but if one would be a bunker to survive some catastrophic event, we can assume that all life outside of the bunker would not survive. So people in bunkers would really just be waiting to die.

Yes, as long as it was close to Tiger Stadium.

If it goes down, most of the world will die of starvation. Having a bunker only prolongs your agony. You won't be able to feed or find enough water for yourself, much less your family.

well. let's say it's not some nuclear winter situation. its a collapse of society and you want to keep your family safe until people kill themselves off. and a semblance of order returns. or at least until it's calm enough to come outside and homestead.

No. Next question.

If you really think you need this, then why are you worried about your retirement. In fact, it sounds like having this would give you something useful for your retirement funds, which will be gone, if the need arises in which you ever do need this bunker.

Nuclear fallout dissipates relatively quickly. Food will be harder than water but it isn’t like life just vanishes. Water won’t be gone if your land has a creek or better yet a well then water isn’t your issue. It’s more about having a secure place to sleep and keep your stash hidden than a place you would need to live in 24/7 for eternity.

You can buy a penthouse in a modified Atlas ballistic missile silo for 6 million.

Most of these prep ppl won’t make it even with their stash.

If you buy a 600k bunker because of fear then why even buy it? Spend your money on getting out and enjoying life.

You may think that’s feasible but there are many factors that go into surviving. If you hold up in something like that hole in the ground, you might eventually get found by vagrants. Any time you store up and sit still you are inviting trouble. You would need booby traps surrounding your property and possibly remote controlled guns setup to fend off intruders. Also without knowing you could be holding up outside an area that has maintained order. Eventually someone is going to need a doctor for medical treatment or medication. Then you are going to have to come out of your little hole in the ground. Also, how are you going to process your waste? This hole needs water treatment equipment in order to keep up with long term demand.

I would say that your shelter should only be utilized for a short while with a plan to get to an area of security where a semblance of law and order exists.

My survival plan involves quickly get my family towards the PNW, preferably Montana. I have a travel trailer for shelter and will be armed to the tooth and avoid Major population centers.

If I were going to hold up and eventually I will need to somewhere, I would chose high ground with as big a parameter as possible, where I could see intruders coming from 800 meters or more. I would have a high power rifle with a kickass scope and rain terror on any unwanted guests.
