Orbital space is important. Going to Mars is not important.

So much DEI has been hired into NASA since Obama started you can’t imagine. If you offered early retirement to people within 5 years of their actual date the real talent would disappear overnight. You’d only be left with folks with HBCU degrees.

As a jobs program , yes.

As a productive enterprise? … not so much.

NASA should be merged with Space Force. There is no reason to have two space based agencies anymore.

If we can harvest the minerals on asteroids / other planets, the potential for humanity is endless.

Even if it were cheap to go, harvest, bring back, the additional quantity would cause the price of that mineral to drop due to overabundance. Thus, the return trip would be unaffordable.

This is the correct answer.

.48% of the budget

If you eliminate 100 items that are 0.48% of the budget you’ve eliminated almost half the budget. If you rule out those things for being small you’ll never cut the budget.

Well, except that you can't do that because four things make up almost 65% of the federal budget.

So unless some of those things that you are going to completely eliminate or substantially reduce are Medicare, Medicaid, the entire military, and SS, you won't get to 48% of the budget being cut.

In other words, you could cut every single line item in the budget except those four things and you'd still be spending almost $4.5 trillion a year.

Add in the interest for the debt (which you can't just eliminate) and you're up to $5.4 trillion. That's without spending a dime on anything else. Not even gas for Air Force One.

We are not going to be budget neutral—ever—until or unless we hugely cut SS/Medicare.

It's like living in a mansion with a $15,000 a month mortgage. You can't make up the difference by clipping coupons and turning the thermostat down and wearing a sweater.

I disagree, BUT not wholly. I believe the majority of most 'general' agencies need to be GUTTED. From there, agencies like NASA should be scrutinized and consideration should be given for agencies like NASA to partner with private industry (to generate income) where possible. Unfortunately for NASA it will take a decade or more for them to recover from the Obama years.

Those four things are not four checks that are either issued or not. Each of those four things are made of millions of smaller things. We might find that the Air Force is overpaying for potato salad in their canteens. You might say that’s only 0.0048% of the Federal Budget, but it’s part of one of those four things you seem to think are monolithic.

SS/Medicare? What about graft in those programs? Let’s say that comes to $100 billion annually. That would be gigantic and would not involve any cuts to honest people.

Elon Musk says we can get a trillion dollars in graft and inefficiencies. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know that it much of it can come from those four areas. And if they can cut a trillion bucks, then we can balance the budget without additional cuts by growing out of the last trillion dollars.

NASA has worked heavily with private contractors since its inception. Did you actually think they built the rockets in-house?

Feds made 4.92 trillion last year

We spent 1.125 trillion on interest

Defense: $900b
NASA: $25b

Cutting USAID and bullshite like that is a good step. All the waste needs to go. But we wont get anywhere without entitlements getting axed. We could cut literally everything but entitlements and would still run a deficit

You do know that when NASA launches something into space, that they buy the rocket from private industry (like SpaceX), right? SpaceX's impressive development of reusable launch vehicles will end up saving taxpayer money.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've read around here in a while!!! LoL
NOTHING the federal government does saves us money!
