The international games are just dumb. American football will always be second to futbol over there. Taking away home games from teams here to play over there is slapping American fans in the face. Look at what the Bills Mafia does for Buffalo. They sit in frigid weather and show up to shovel the stadium out after snow storms. Then the NFL yanks home games away from them to play in Europe or wherever.

Then not only did you have Kap but shite blew up again after George Floyd. Then they go out and find these acts for the SB halftime show that wants to shove more politics in the mix. The politics would be a lot more tolerable if they would be balanced about it. If Bad Bunny wants to shove love wing politics this year then next year let’s see Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, or maybe Big and Rich next year. Funny how we never can find a right winger to play the SB. I would prefer politics out of it all together but if we have to be preached at then let’s balance it out. Sooner or later there will be another police shooting and the players will get preachy again and that’s eventually just gonna turn people off for good. Then the NFL better hope those international fans stick around because that’s the fans they will be depending on to keep them in business.

Not only are you living an old white man bubble, but you’re living in a musical genre bubble.

I’m a conservative white 50+ male.
Bad Bunny is absolutely not my style, but why do you assume everyone likes Metallica in the first place?

And then of course it's quite natural to assume that you represent the median viewer and thus the NFL should be aiming their focus squarely at you.

To be fair, we've seen eventual issues with sports leagues who neglect their core fans and chase wider audiences. Just look at what happened to NASCAR.

There has been a recent boom of soccer fans in Europe, particularly the UK, opting to support local lower-league and non-league teams because bigger clubs have priced them out in favor of tourist fans who will pay premiums for tickets. It has led to sterile home environments and even empty seats due to fan boycotts or protests.

Sure, chasing global audiences looks good to the bottom line now, but the novelty has shown to wear off eventually. We saw it happen with the World League/NFL Europe. The NFL believes they can still crack the international code, but I don't think they can force a sports culture to grow through halftime shows.

Bringing bugs bunny over to the NFL is like inviting a bunch of straight conservative males to the grand opening to broadway and saying that's their audience.

You’re very wrong here. Metallica halftime show would be an instant top three of all time.

Everyone i know has been to mcdonalds. Not a single fricking person has ever heard of bugs bunny before the super bowl announcement. His music is terrible and majority people can't understand a single lyric.
He sings in Spanish. Wonder how many NFL players are fluent in Spanish? I would guess that number would 1-2%. If the NFL's plan is to try to go global, turning off a massive amount of people in that compose the largest consumer group in the WORLD, is a huge mistake.

I hope Turning Point is prepared for the amount of traffic they are about to receive.

Give it time. Baseball was America'a favorite sport for over 100 years and look at it now. Destroyed by strikes, scandals, and fan boredom.

Exactly

And a note about current NFL ratings. They do dominate. They are the biggest draw in TV land, no other programming comes close.

However, with every large company spending money on ads for football all season long - and all the money made by betting houses - its ripe for corruption.

Separate from bad reffing they will do anything and everything to protect their cash cow.

Does anyone think the ratings are actually legit? Or maybe juiced a bit? Like elections stolen it would be so much easier to fudge ratings numbers to keep feeding the cash cow.

And having said that - lots will be looking to the ratings early next week to see how bad the halftime show did. Don’t bother, those numbers will be juiced as well. Maybe will show a slight decline but not a lot. Because they can’t show a huge decline. That would ruin their imagine and future ads.

I see so much about people boycotting it. We’ll never truly know how many but it will be a lot regardless what the ratings show.

EXACTLY! The NASCAR model should be taught in all marketing classes. Disenfranchise your base, and prepare for the mass exodus coupled with less revenue.!

Football is a manly sport. It attracts the fan that wants to see the human male performing violent acts upon other manly males, trying to dominate them physically. Football fans sit on the edge of our seats, waiting to see just who gets the upper hand,......... now, with a break in the action, we are given a 180 and get to watch a dude sing in a language we don't speak, while wearing a dress. A dude that goes by "Bad Bunny".

47% of superbowl viewers are 55 or older.

You are missing the point. The product isn’t popular because they are making it popular with good sound business decisions and new fresh ideas. It’s popular because people love football. If the decision makers though keep throwing politics into the mix and letting some players like Kap shite on half the consumers then sooner or later people will leave and never come back. A lot have done left because of that type junk.

Meanwhile, all the numbers point to the NFL being more popular now than ever. Your argument is “uh uh they should be ever more popular-er!” You guys just love to deny reality to fit your preconceived notions.

We saw Chubbie Checker... in the 80s. Gloria Estefan... in the 90's. Several times. Diana Ross in 96. Paul McCartney in 2005, The Rolling Stones in 2006,The Who in 2010, you can go on. Those were "old people", way past their prime, who could give a medley of songs that were universally known.

Sorry to break it to you, but those songs are not “universally known” to all generations. Sports leagues need to attract and appeal to people who can be fans for the next 50+ years….

They have such a market share in the U.S., the way to expand the business is to gain international market share. As such, they have regular international games and they book the most frequently downloaded artist in the world to perform their marquee event halftime show. Sounds to me like they are making sound business decisions. They will not lose many fans, if any, over Bad Bunny, but they will gain viewers for tomorrow they may not have had. They grow every year. They are finding new ways to grow. They are outstanding at business.

Nah man you don’t get it. Ignore all the numbers. Trust rando TD poster; obviously he knows more about maintaining the dominance of while also growing one of the largest sports leagues in the world more than the NFL powers at be. Obviously.

This makes no sense. This board of majority straight conservative males loves to puff out their chest that they haven’t watched the NFL in years.

The ratings for the halftime show will be abysmal when it could have been huge.
This is not about ratings for the halftime show. Dylan Mulvaney's Bud Light beer can probably got more views than any single beer can design in history. It is about messaging.

I don't know 'Bad Bunny' from Adam. I'd guess that will be true of the majority of the audience. But if the dude takes the stage at halftime and spews anti-American screed, he'll be famous worldwide. If he doesn't, a large part of the audience will have forgotten his name by next week.

Might make for interesting TV. If the guy acts out, which apparently is his shtick, it could (and should) damage the NFL brand. Choice of this artist was a high risk, low reward prospect for the league. That in and of itself should have someone's head on the chopping block, regardless of outcome.

Crazy that you started this thread when you did

Just yesterday, I was arguing with a friend that if people didn’t like music so much, Metallica would never have made it big

I don’t care if all they did was stand on stage and recite Shakespeare. It would still be better than Bad Bunny.
