This is pretty much exactly what I expected from them.
Look at things from their point of view.

In their minds the 2016 was proof that the voters could no longer be trusted to choose their own leaders.

They spent four years trying to undo the mistake the people made.

In their mind, for the USA to remain relevant in the world we have to move toward a totalitarian system similar to China. Democracy is too slow and messy. We need to centralize power to be able to react and project that power more quickly before the next pandemic, gas crisis border crisis etc. The next crisis is right around the corner, you just don't know it yet.

In their mind the idea of checks and balances are outdated and work against our "national interest".

How do you change it ?

You run the country into the ground. You overwhelm the citizens with crisis after crisis.

Then you declare democracy broken beyond repair. End the filibuster.

Pass HR-1. Pack the Supreme Court. Overwhelm the border.

Rid yourself of the need to be held accountable to the people.

I'd say their plan is going exactly as expected.
