Don’t forget Teacher unions
Top heavy districts
Misuse of funding
Take away their government funded pensions and increase their pay and they can work with a financial planner on their retirement needs. Tell them to vote out the unions for extra savings.

In Alabama, firemen and troopers have State funded insurance. Care to guess who has better, State-funded insurance? That's right, the teachers.

The men and women, who are called into running into burning buildings, and not knowing if a thug will pop a cap during a routine traffic stop, get worse coverage, and pay more, than the PE teacher of a kindergarten class.

But, but that’s not pay man.
Teachers by and large overlook the big picture of what their total compensation package is.

Trust me, there are kids (and parents) at the highly rated schools (and private schools) who fit this description, too. It's ironic, paying that much money to complain about your child's education being too much work.

How does this get solved, instead of just complaining and complaining and complaining about it?
It's called parenting 101, but as stated earlier they don't give a damn.. So how do you make parents do what they are supposed to do?

Yes..

Divest in gov ran school systems.
Give the money to local gov to use. That generally equals better over site and less money spent via the DEpt of Education.
Break up schools graduating 400 plus per year. Cap it off to 50 students... This allows smaller class rooms.

They should be paid more, but not tenured. Pay based on student performance.

Not at all. I identified the issues and they all need to be handled.

Some good stuff, and a lot of bullshite in the responses, as per usual when teaching is the subject. Wife has been a teacher for 15 years, FWIW.
Yes, benefits and time off are better than many jobs, but it’s not as much as people think. The 3 months off is really closer to 2 months. There are required workshops in the summer, every year. Most of the teachers I know, spend at least a week or two getting their classroom together in preparation for the start of the year.
She is at school at 7:30 every morning, school is out at 3:30. Then it is home, grading papers and inputting grades for at least 2 hours, most of the time 3 hours, and many times 4 hours or more. That’s a 10 hour day average, easy.
Teachers are also very subject to get volunteered to work concession stands, attend and/or help at functions of all kinds, chaperone proms, help with hospitality for basketball tournaments, etc. All after hours.
Then there are parent teacher meeting days, where she is at school until 8:30-9:00.
And sure math, English, etc. haven’t changed in 400 years, but how they are taught, the standards that are expected to be met, and the materials and information used to teach them changes with dismaying regularity.
Then you have special needs and behavioral problem children, that only seem to increase every year. Do you know that state requirements for these kids requires the teacher to follow individual plans for each special needs kid? Some of them have to have the material read to them. Some of them must be talked through each problem/question. Some must be given extra time to complete assignments. Some of them must have the number of problems/questions reduced, so they don’t get frustrated and violent. Some of them must have the problems/questions vetted, to better achieve the kids level of learning/understanding.
Then extensive reports must be written and compiled about each of these students, explaining how the teacher is employing all of these strategies to educate that one child.
Most people have no idea the amount of work teaching entails these days. And the thing that kills the good teachers souls and spirit is the fact that it is almost impossible to foster and challenge the exceptional kids, because so much time is spent on kids who have no business in a regular classroom to begin with.

Why not let parents of student determine the teacher’s bonus?

Teachers are over paid and don’t do shite

Teachers are underpaid.
Administrators at those same schools are grossly overpaid.

Y’all just got fricking raises all over the country. STFU unless your students are blowing it out on ACT & SAT scores. Teaching should be merit based.
But if every person could blow these tests out the water, the tests become meaningless for their intended purpose of college admissions. These tests were designed to stratify test takers. Some people have to do poorly and some average—that’s how they were built.
Now could other tests be designed that all students should be able to pass? Absolutely. I do think that can and should happen. I also think we shouldn’t give the same tests to kids who have documented learning disabilities that are extreme or kids who can’t speak the language.

Its crazy that teachers at top private schools don't even make any money. Requires a degree and make less than some student interns man. Its no wonder people don't wanna do it.
Posted on 6/19/19 at 11:50 pm to Jjdoc
Hard argument to make. Public school teachers already make considerably more than private school teachers.
Posted on 6/19/19 at 11:52 pm to Jjdoc
Do you know any public school teachers in la?
I do. Some I would say are good people, but at the end of the day even they admit they are just passing the buck along to the next level to deal with. Teachers are straight up passing failing students not to teach them more than once in this state.
