7.56 MJ of energy

I think the amount of energy that would be released would be substantially greater. 8.2 metric tons is about 4 times the mass of a loaded SUV. That hitting the Earth intact can cause a LOT of damage, and likely a sizable impact crater.

They better hope it don't land on Mr. Gilmore's property!

This is why China should not be allowed to participate in the open world. They have no plan for how to deal with this, nor does it seem like they care.

I'm wondering if they would have no problem with the US doing open-air nuclear tests over their territory since they have no issue with dropping multi-stage rockets randomly from the sky.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just want to see some numbers so show your calcs. Here is mine:

21 metric tons time 20-40% expected to survive re-entry:

Low end kinetic energy = (1/2)(0.2*21000 kg)(60 m/s)^2 = 7.56 MJ of energy which is about 3.6 sticks of dynamite.

High end kinetic energy = (1/2)(0.4*21000 kg)(60 m/s)^2 = 15.12 MJ of energy which is about 7.2 sticks of dynamite.

It all depends on the terminal velocity. For example the terminal velocity of a human free falling is about 58 m/s. Sheet metal would reach a terminal velocity quicker. A metal sphere with the same mass would have a MUCH higher terminal velocity.

IMO there will be some large chunks but I expect the parts of the rocket that land to earth will fall in pieces spreading the total energy over a large part of the earth. The more spread out the better.

8.2 metric tons at 60 m/s is a little over 7 sticks of dynamite. Travelling at 120 m/s is a little over 14 sticks of dynamite.

There are fears that the rocket could land on an inhabited area; the last time a Long March rocket was launched in May 2020, debris was reported falling on villages in the Ivory Coast. The speed of the rocket means scientists still do not yet know when it will fall, but it is likely to do so before 10 May 2021.

Probably going to land on some redneck’s property in Appalachia, he’ll find it while hunting, and sell it back to China for some meth.

Wow. What if a large piece of that rocket lands on something important in DC?

Biden would probably apologize for Xi.

Pretty sure they knew this would happen and give zero fricks.

Take note for anyone who thinks China will voluntarily comply with things like carbon emissions. They clearly put their priorities above the concerns of the rest of the world.

and the CCP loves that we are all arguing over Liz Freaking Cheney and Caitlyn while it could hit any where any time.

then I wonder if our own govt under Biden would do any Bruce Willis type movies IRL to stop it or at least warn people?

And NASA had an asteroid simulation a week or so ago? They just might know where it's going without saying they know where it's going.

I have a hard time believing "they" don't know where on earth its going. They could drop a cube of sugar out of orbit through my office window and into my coffee if they wanted to.

Odds are though, it'll land in water or somewhere uninhabited.

She'd easily absorb all that energy and keep on grifting.
