How white and affluent drivers are polluting the air breathed by L.A.’s people of color

Like many Angelenos, I spend a lot of time behind the wheel of my car. I drive from my Westside apartment to Dodger Stadium near downtown and farther east to hike in the San Gabriel Mountains. I take the 405 Freeway north to the San Fernando Valley to see friends, or occasionally south to the L.A. Times office — or to the airport, where I grow my carbon footprint even further.
So I couldn’t help but consider my own complicity while reading a new study from USC researchers, finding that Angelenos who drive more tend to be exposed to less air pollution — and Angelenos who drive less tend to be exposed to more pollution.
It may sound like a paradox, but it’s not. It’s a function of the racism that shaped this city and its suburbs, and continues to influence our daily lives — and a stark reminder of the need for climate solutions that benefit everyone.

We need to get away from all this stuff and just be a colorblind society. Everyone is an American. Do your job. Work hard and try to succeed. Do away with all affirmative action programs. Treat each other fairly. Stop incentives which provide for black teenage girls to have children by three different “men” and send them out to prey on or drain the assets of society. Teach our children the unvarnished truth about all the great things America and our forebears have accomplished. Enough of this woke crap.

I thought Clayton Bigsby was a comedy skit?

If you trip over yourself to find racism, expect to find racism.

If some people weren't so set against photo IDs, they too could drive and pollute.

Why are people in CA obsessed with telling us where they drive, what roads they're on etc?

Beathing the air in L.A. is the main problem. When you drive the car it doesn't hurt people who are in the car with AC on. Other than that people in general will be breathing the polluted air that will make them sick. Have that not been taught anywhere in L.A.?

Because nobody walks in L.A.

Ask the POC in Detroit and Flint what happens when white people stop driving in their cities.
Is it a positive or negative.

This guy should just kill himself for the harm he's doing to minority communities.

And what science do you base this assumption on?
Modern vehicles have hepa filters for recirculated cabin air.
Hepa filters will capture fine particles, but won't help with CO or other pollutants.
Vehicle cabins are not sealed environments, outside air is always getting in. If outside air wasn't getting in, we would asphyxiate.

Billions of tax dollars for a bullet train would fix all that… oh, never mind
