Six theories floating on this board right now for what he’s trying to do. It’s a board full of retards, how are you surprised to find one of any persuasion floating around.

It's just going to be like this. For all the celebration of how Trump cornered China, there's going to be reporting like today about how the EU and China are negotiating right now to reduce Chinese tariffs to strengthen their trading relationship

I guess you wish Biden or Kamala was back in office so you’d know their clear intent. Got it.

Is it unreasonable to not want Kamala in office and also want clear intent?

Look, believe what you want. But, he was facing a bond market that was behaving in a very much non traditional way. He had China and Japan dumping treasuries . Both acting on their overall individual best interests.
I'm not convinced that Trump knows what he's doing overall. He's way too confident in his negotiating abilities.....and his negotiating abilities are not as great as he would brag about. I always remember the story of Angela Merkel having to tell him that any trade deals had to be done with the EU and not Germany alone

eh, two things in order of significance:
1. Bond market caused him to back off.
2. Holy shite, we have 75 negotiations and then possibly 75 deals to write up and, knowing Trump, very ceremoniously sign.... just too much to do. "It'll never be ready in time!"

Currently over 75 nations who have trade agreements with the US are lining up to meet with Team Trump's trade negotiators to draft trade agreements that are beneficial to both nations.....and hardliners in the CCP are not happy.
Those 75 nations understand that the US is the #1 economy and foremost power in the world, and that China is the #2 economy and penultimate power in the world. If they have to choose between the US that does its fair share of evil but is ultimately immensely profitable and a powerful ally, versus siding with the CCP that is actually guilty of widescale human rights violations, ethnic cleansing and has been on the record for decades as their goal being worldwide domination?
I'm pretty sure you go with the more powerful lesser of two evils.

Plus the theory that it's unknowable, so you can't criticize because you don't know what he's trying to accomplish.

I think this is theory #6, now.
President Trump keeping the hardcore MAGA disciples, leftists and Main Stream Media all guessing. Honestly, doing so could very well be a key to helping this all turn into a successful outcome for him and America.

It’s redundant to say that he caved when he increased Chinas tariffs. China is the big fish in the pond in regards to trade.
And the “Trump was worried about bond yields” argument is also crap considering China was the main one dumping bonds and raising tariffs again on them wouldn’t stop that

quote:With Trump? Yes, it is completely UNREASONABLE to expect him to be clear if that will affect his NEGOTIATIONS. You will never ever never be told clear intent if gaining ground in any way might be impacted by it.
Is it unreasonable to not want Kamala in office and also want clear intent?
So, all of you people who can't wrap you head around that, please make another thread about "what does it mean" and "I wish he would tell us".

In the middle but I don't believe there is a middle ground here.
China retaliated against Trump's original 34% Chinese tariffs with an 84% tariff on U.S. imports into China. Then apparently according to the anti-Trumpers China in conjunction with Japan sold U.S. Treasuries on the bond market causing a disruption on the bond market.
The anti-Trumps then say that Trump caved by doing the following:
Trump threatened with a 104% tariff on China then officially Trump "reversed" course on everyone with a 10% baseline tariff except for China where he upped their tariff from 104% to 125%.
But Trump didn't punish Japan. In fact Japan was lumped into the countries of good trading partners. All these countries tariffs have gone down to 10% for 90 days as each trading partners' trade deal is worked out:

This is the administrations position. IDK why it seems so implausible to people.
On a side note...
Remember during the 2016 campaign how Trump would constantly rhetorically rail against China on the campaign trail? He did it in almost every campaign rally.
Then during his first term he played pretty nice with Xi and China.
In 2024 campaign Trump was pretty quiet about China relative to 2016.
But as soon as he was inaugurated he filled the economic side of his cabinet with China hawks.
The Trump second term Trump appears to be taking a lot more tougher stance against China.
