Do you think:

1) They were completely involved. It was their plan from the beginning.

2) They knew about it, but wasnt their plan. They just allowed it to happen

3) They didn't know about it. There was no malice, but there was incompetence, they (federal agencies) were aware of Atta and all the terrorists and who they were. But because of PC reasons and incompetence, they didn't follow up with them as they should have.

4) Completely unaware. Bin Laden pulled the entire thing off under their noses, and they had no idea about these guys or what they might be planning.

5) they didn’t know anything because Bill Clinton balanced the budget by decimating the military and cut spending and support for such useless military practices as foreign intelligence/ counter intelligence.

But hey he got a hummer in the Oval Office so all’s good right.

Used to be #2. The last 7 years have put me squarely in #1. The American political class is thoroughly and irredeemably evil.

I’ll go with #3.

Overall incompetence and lack of inter-agency communication and follow up.

FFS they had flight instructors dropping complaints that these guys are just training to fly and not land.

But Saudi Arabia was way more involved than we’ll ever be told. Can’t make your main supplier of oil angry by actually prosecuting the financiers of the whole thing.

Ten years ago, I would agree.

As of the last 10, Conspiracy Theories have simply become spoiler alerts.

W was (is?) VERY close to the Saudis as well.

In the very least, that relationship (given what happened) is odd as frick.

15 of the hijackers were Saudis and yet we spend 20 years in Afghanistan and Iraq while giving the Saudis billions in weapons. The War on Terror was a warm-up exercise. Use a simultaneously broad and vague term to create a separate legal paradigm that circumvents constitutional protections, which can and will eventually be used against domestic political dissidents. We have reached that point, and it all stems from 9/11. It was most certainly an inside job.

4 dancing Israelis say #1.

Also, the only things that became of it are the Orwellian surveillance laws and an entire department of the government used to enforce them, not to mention the massive expenditure of military hardware and resources that has produced NOTHING. The exact same people are once again in charge of Afghanistan and terrorists have been released back into the wild.

Totally orchestrated.

yeah, I am at this point now. Thing is, I believe Bush was sincerely surprised and his actions were legit. The reaction while being told while reading to the kids. The bullhorn speech.

Now Cheney and Rumsfeld? Those two establishment, deepstate aholes? Oh, and Bush Senior?

We have an evil, military and "intelligence agency" industrial complex.

Elements of 2, most likely.

Just look back at who has benefited the most from what happened. It wasn't the Bush family specifically. But BIG GOV certainly has expanded and become more intrusive.

On all fronts.

How safe did Americans in big cities feel during the Summer of Love?

All that tracking of terrorists and violent offenders went awol. Full acquittals of those who firebombed gov buildings, looted stores, destroyed property...

But magically, grandma who took a stroll on the Capitol lawn is now a number one threat to our democracy???

Uh, no they were definitely Israelis. They even went on Israeli TV to claim that they were in fact, horrified, not happy.

Ah, except that there are photos of them smiling and posing for pictures. One has the burning towers in the background, with him in the foreground holding a lighter.

And they all had airline tickets on them, tickets to 4 different international locations. Nothing suspicious there.

Q: What's the difference between a conspiracy theory and the truth?
A: On average, about 18 months.
