AI wouldn't in the short term, people in charge of it could.

Depends on who gets the quantum computer first. What's scary is quantum computing and AI together. They ones who first develop quality quantum computing (it's available today to some degree) will have an advantage over other who don't. Hopefully, the first will use it for good and not nefarious purposes. I have Norton Password Manager and a 13-14 character password would take 31,000 years to crack. My understanding quantum can do it in minutes.

I sell applications with AI components into hospitals. If the internet was ever shut down to "stop the spread" of an AI threat, hospitals will not be able to function. Electronic charting like Epic , control over simple processes like running MRI machines and OR/lab protocols, and even dietary and housekeeping are run by folks who dont remember hospitals without internet overlords or AI analytics. They cannot function in its absence. Today taking it down for any planned maintenance, or unplanned outage is absolute chaos. It would be a total breakdown if down for 2 weeks.

Stephen King touched on this in 1986- Maximum Overdrive, where machine began attacking humans (because earth passed through a comet tail)

Maximum Overdrive deaths :

1. The soda-can machine
Probably the most ridiculous death in the movie. The vending machine effectively turns ordinary cans of soda into high-velocity ammunition. The coach gets blasted in the groin and head before the machine turns on the children.

2. The steamroller
The driverless steamroller comes through the Little League field and simply runs over a fleeing kid. Deke sees it happen and escapes on his bicycle.

3. The drawbridge
This is actually one of the largest death sequences. The bridge inexplicably raises while traffic is on it, sending vehicles into the water and into each other.

4. The truck-stop massacre
This is the biggest concentrated human death scene. After Bubba shoots at the bulldozer, the M60-equipped vehicle retaliates by firing directly into the Dixie Boy. Bubba, Wanda June and several truckers are killed.

5. The Green Goblin truck
The famous Happy Toyz truck with the giant Green Goblin face becomes the principal antagonist. It eventually hunts the survivors to the marina and runs over Brad before Bill destroys it with a LAW rocket.

All of the above. The problem is that eventually, China will have the higher intelligence and will pit itself against the AI in the free world. It could eventually use it to blackmail every politician (kind of like they do now) by bringing all the receipts. Assume you are a very high placed or elected politician, business leader, supreme court Judge. Every porn site you busted a nut to, every hidden record of every crime the government has committed against its own people, your secret fetishes, your offshore accounts and multi-layered shell companies to hide it all. If that isn't enough it'll just remove your access, or, it'll break your 1024-bit encrypted password and just change it and take your wealth.

The cautionary part for China is how to dominate without killing off their markets.

Without much technical knowledge, which I choose to remain so, I have one factor that guides me in forming an opinion on A.I.
If the Democrats are for slowing down A.I. and putting regulations in place that will get 'em their way...I'M FOR FULL SPEED AHEAD with A.I.
I've been around long enough to have witnessed a complete shift in the Democrat Party. What once was a party that sought to improve the lives of everyday, working-class Americans has now become a "welcoming party" for illegals and criminals from around the world.
Take a backseat, Joe Citizen, cause this taxi is for everything wrong in America! Americans being raped and killed by illegals, they couldn't care less. Illegals gaining the system to bilk the taxpayers, they're all for it, as long as it gets the sleazy politicians elected (see: Tampon Tim & his A.G.)
Men competing against women in sports, they condone it. Abortions up until the time of birth, they're in step with it. Mutilation of young children to appease the mentally deranged "trans" community, they're on board.
I could go on and on, but bottom line is: IF A DEMOCRAT IS FOR IT, I'M AGAINST IT!

Small insect sized bots with a stinger and enough venom to kill a dozen people. Imagine a swarm of millions released on the east coast.

Doesn't matter who develops it. Of anyone ever gets to super-intelligence, which needs quantum computing, then AI can rewrite itself over and over and over and have a 1,000,000+ IQ in minutes. China, nor anyone else could not control it from there. It would serve AI's interests and not China or the USA or anyone else.

At least that is what I heard on Joe Rogan.

It is referred to as the AI Paperclip Problem - it isn't a new idea however.

I never said it's magic. AI doesn't have to be magic, it just needs to be vastly more intelligent than we are built into most of systems that people require to live as we do.
AI is becoming exponentially more intelligent (as well as deceitful) amd humans will give it access to the systems. Thats the entire plan!!

Another thought..... probably none of our ideas will happen. Our monkey brains won't be able to imagine what AI will be capable of. Like an ant trying to understand a human. It's not there yet,but that's the direction things are going.

Major AI companies are being integrated into military weapons systems for automated killing machines.

That's about one of a dozen ways AI could be problematic.

They could shut down some small town water treatment plant, let the bacteria contaminate the water and people get sick; kill switch on power plant/substation where a hospital generator goes out and patients die, etc.

All that plus more sinister stuff - like fake notifications of Nuclear launches from all sources.
