Not at all. Politics is not a career. It’s not a normal job. Your role is to serve your community by representing them in the Congress. If family issues or an illness keep you from doing your job of representing your district, then step aside and allow others to serve.

This seems like a really tone def view by GOP leadership. This is the equivalent of saying it is ok to fire a woman for being pregnant. The courts would have a field day with the lawsuits.

Harebrained simile! Congressperson is no job for someone who is the mother of a little baby. This is similar to Pete Buttguy taking leave when he and his “husband” adopted a baby. If you can’t do the job resign. These are not ordinary jobs; these are jobs that are critical to our nation. You can’t be on a SWAT team, for example, if you are on maternity leave.

In what way is she or has she not represented her district? What key votes has she missed? How has she failed her district? She has a newborn at home... and if the case arises, she just might need to vote by proxy. Oh the horror. That is simply not the same as not representing her district. It is actually doing whatever is necessary to make sure her district is represented.

Pelosi allowed them to vote by proxy for any reason. When the GOP took control they stopped that practice and made them vote in person. Luna is trying to revive the prior practice for pregnancies, but of course it would then get extended to illnesses, old age, convenience, etc. It’s a disgrace.

Why is it OK to prevent democratically elected representatives from doing the job they were elected to do? This isn't a bill to ask for WFH because they dont want to go into the office. This isn't a bill to let them vote at a later date just because it is inconvenient.

Why not? The mothers in congress have the biggest balls in the group. They are the ones willing to fight the most.

Well if she can’t be there to vote, then she’s probably isn’t representing her district. If the voters are fine with that, great. Every time I see Luna do an interview, she’s in Florida. I never see her in DC doing an interview. I don’t think that’s acceptable. But again, I’m in the minority on this. I actually have standards.

Whenever a Democrat wants to make the point that the other side has a “too vocal” subset of assholes that are hostile to women and disingenuous in their support of families, all they need to do is point to this thread.

This is how the Republicans will lose the majority. Stuff like this. It’s what happened in 2006. Mark my words.

What is wrong with this? Most new mothers take 12 weeks of maternity leave, why not extend that to proxy voting for new mothers in congress?

Walk that out for me, please. How does allowing mothers with newborns (and fathers) vote by proxy lose the majority?

Although you may well be right. But not in the way you think you are.

The pro family party coming out against a pro family measure... not a good look. At all.

But... she's just a dumb bitch, right? What does she matter?

Why is this a hill to die on? How many pregnant women per year are we talking about? 1 or 2?

Simply because their only job is to show up and vote. It’s for pregnant women now. But why not cancer patients, or sick kids, or moms dying, or they’re getting transgender surgery. It’s a slippery slope. Show up and do your job. Or don’t and quit.

Sure. Lets just open all these other doors to keep people from having to vote in person. I'm sure that will end up in our favor.

I never said that.

The GOP specifically campaigned for abolishing proxy voting and making the case that congressmen needed to vote in person. That it was important. Now we say, actually, proxy voting is fine if you want to get pregnant and have kids while in Congress. It’s hypocritical. It’s not pro woman to create double standards and contort your principles because it’s the expedient thing to do.

Either vote in person or don’t run for Congress.

Congress isn’t a work from home gig. Sorry. We pay them to go to Washington.
