The Department of Justice and 17 state attorneys general reached a $3.3 million settlement with three of the nation’s largest egg producers for alleged price manipulation that “artificially increased” egg prices for consumers and retailers, federal and state officials said Monday.

The egg producers — Cal-Maine Foods, Versova and Hickman’s Egg Ranch — also agreed to donate about 53 million eggs combined to food banks or related non-profits as part of the settlement.

Based on the current average price of a dozen large Grade A eggs — about $2.19 per dozen — those eggs could be worth roughly $9.7 million at the retail level.

The DOJ and state coalition alleged the companies “illegally coordinated” over nearly three years to inflate a daily price index for eggs, citing the results of an investigation into egg-price collusion that began more than a year ago.

The allegations of collusion come amid an affordability crunch among U.S. consumers and as inflation has risen at its fastest pace in more than three years.

And who pays when the companies 'donate' all those eggs?

Anyone going to go to prison for this? There definitely should be.

Let me know when that happens.

I get heckled for saying price manipulation is behind high prices. Now they need to go after every corporation in control of food, healthcare, and everything else we need prosecute these thieves.

... Or the culling of US cattle herds leading to the lowest US cattle count per capita since the 19th century. It is the type of mismanagement that takes around six years to correct. So odd that one never hears that story in news accounts dealing with high grocery prices. The Potatobrain administration was wretched in more ways than one can count.

That could be a perilous proposition here.

Public corruption and corporate price collusion should be treated like crack cocaine going forward. If you get caught, you’re going to federal pound me the arse prison for a long time.

Which party supports that?

Why aren’t they forced to drop prices to an equal amount for ALL consumers? Why do the NGOs get the freebies?

Yup, I'm a billion % capitalist, but when companies complain about everything being so expensive and difficult (while simultaneously posting record profit margins) it's either:

1. bullshite
2. bullshite by the accounting department
