Its a Hindu holiday but celebrated by all religions and a national holiday here.

You purchase deyas, small teacup sized clay bowls with wax and a wick. At nightfall you light them and place around your property.

Its in honor of Mother Lakshmi. It is said that if you honor her on this day, when dark times fall upon you in the year to come......she will light the way for you to see your way out of your troubles.

Divali is a festival of lights
Let me tell you something
Tonight has been one crazy night

So put on your saris
It's time to celebrate Divali
Everybody looks so jolly
But it's not Christmas, it's Divali
The goddess of destruction Kali
Stopped by to celebrate Divali
Don't invite any zombies
To a celebration of Divali
Along came Polly
To have some fun at Divali
If you're Indian and you love to party
Have a happy, happy, happy, happy Divali

From Google AI......

quote:

The spelling often depends on regional usage, with "Diwali" being more common in North India and "Divali" being prevalent in certain diaspora communities, such as in Trinidad and Tobago.

Though both spellings are seen in Trinidad.

Trinidad does holidays right. They celebrate all religions. Same with Malaysia. I had 19 holidays when I lived in Kuala Lumpur.

I went to a Divali celebration. It was at a middle school gym at night. People went barefoot. They danced and ate good food. When it was over, I discovered somebody had stolen my shoes.

She is a liberal loon but I'd like a crack at her. Hell, she might go more moderate with a proper lay

Yeah, because Trinidad treats religion likes it's a buffet.

I see they're hauling a bunch of packages of humanitarian daily rations. What a great group of philanthropists!
