Yeah, those soldiers totally didn't just adopt and bring home a regional recipe that had existed for hundreds of years before their arrival.
That's as absurd as saying European white settlers in the US came up with pemmican and didn't adopt the process from American Indians, or saying some white American Karen in the 90s came up with fish tacos.

Back before the industrial revolution, and the advent of manufactured seed and vegetable oils in the early 20th century, people used to have to render fat to make cooking oil. This meant that cooking oil was scarce and expensive. To have enough oil to fry chicken was considered a luxury. Thus, fried chicken used to be considered a delicacy and a status symbol.
