I think that Pat Buchanan would've been a great choice in either 1988 or 1992. Among other things, Pat tried to warn people about the mostly one-sided culture war that was taking place in America.
He was right, of course, but America wasn't ready to hear it.

I saw he was right on the culture war, but even I did not realize how far ahead he saw on immigration. I knew it was a problem, but I did not see it was a catastrophe in the making

I always found Jeanne Kirkpatrick to be an interesting prospect. Her political views were complex. She was raised a socialist but found that it wasn't a workable system. Then a Democrat before becoming a Republican in 1985. Reagan appointed her as Ambassador to the UN. She was a tough cookie. A virulent anti-communist and labeled as a neocon but I don't find that label accurate. She felt removing a dictator often made the situation worse and said GWB was "too interventionist". Agree with her or not, she had mettle not found in modern pols. Could have been the American Margaret Thatcher. At any rate, I felt she would have been a better president than GHWB.

Goldwater-no great society/ended Vietnam
Perot-no nafta
Paul-ended Iraq/afghanistan, ended TSA/IRS, lots of other things (volunteered for both of his campaigns)
Buchanan-no bush dynasty
