Gov. Jeff Landry is inviting hundreds of Louisiana elected officials and business leaders to Abbeville next week to announce that Elon Musk's company SpaceX is planning to build a multibillion-dollar spaceport on a roughly 18-mile stretch of the coast about 45 miles southwest of Lafayette.

An invitation, sent via email by the governor’s office and Louisiana Economic Development on Wednesday, said Landry and LED Secretary Susan Bourgeois "cordially invite you to join them in announcing a defining moment for Louisiana's future."

The event is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Abbeville, the Vermilion Parish seat and the closest city to the site of the planned spaceport.

Landry's office declined to comment but sources familiar with the deal said the subject of the announcement is the SpaceX project.

I’m skeptical of the data centers, but I love this. This could be as transformative for Southwest Louisiana as Chenier Energy.

Ironically, this launch site will be mainly used to launch orbital data centers one day. Elon wants to take them off Earth.

Same. Imagine Huntsville/Alabama telling Boeing or NASA to f-off/NIMBY.

I am curious about the scale of it. And if they go through with the vertical integration from production/fuel/launch.

For all his goofiness, Landry has done great for getting businesses into the state. What I’m wondering is how this will fare against hurricanes being right on the coast

Always wondered why LA got left out of the Southeast Space Coast with Johnson, Stennis, Marshall, Canaveral. Kennedy, etc. all around.

Actually think an underrated thing is all these major businesses now have a vested interest in protecting the coast and will help fund restoration efforts

Congrats Louisiana! Been following this for a while.

They will create another launch site hopefully deep in that. 130,000 acres so large the existing Starbase would fit in it 900 times.

They don't need all of the space, obviously... but it creates an impressive buffer for ships launching every day, perhaps ever hour.

Felix of 'What about it' give a description at the beginning of one of his videos.

I'm envious, wish my back yard was a candidate.

I wonder where the Exxon Coastal Lawsuit settlement comes into play.

Landry LED's MO is to give away the farm. Did Exxon give the land to the State and SpaceX get a $1/year lease deal? (Similar to the Hyundai deal).

Eta: like I mentioned, this is awesome. I just hesitate when it comes to handing out billions of public resources to private corporations.
