I disagree, society is more accepting today of homosexuals than it was decades ago. So its not surprising to think that it appeared to be less decades ago.
Also no one said 5% is gay, bisexual (the "B" in LGBTQ) makes up probably half of that.
So you're probably closer to 2-2.5% gay.

Anyway, they better be worrying about the trans movement & pissing the straight women of this country off. Those things (trans) are stealing all of our women’s glory in anything competitive. Won’t be long and our lovely ladies are going to turn on the mentally ill (trans) folks.

Because there is now a smaller percentage of the population carrying the X chromosome?
Towards the surveys mentioned in the OP, the way they ask the question is key. Could craft a question that gives them the desired high percentages in an age class (i.e. the 20% of 18-34 year olds).

Yeah I'm not for this forced diversity thing. For one a writer or team of writers shouldn't be forced to change their characters based the demands of a group.
On a larger note forcing things like this leads to terrible writing. Either many of the gay characters will be stereotypes or just feel unnatural.
Plenty of movies, shows, and games have very well written gay characters and it shows that when you don't force something the product has a far higher chance of coming out great.
A good example would be Ellie from The Last of Us. ND wasn't forced into making any of their characters gay but two of them are and nobody outside a few idiots who didn't play the DLC complained. That's because her character was well written and her being gay felt natural and not forced
