Giving money to a person on the street

Do you have a standard?
The guy telling the story “my car is out of gas and I need a few bucks to get to Houston”.
The guy who just walks up to you and may live in the neighborhood.
The obvious homeless guy because he’s pulling a suitcase.
Never.

I went to 1st baptist Church in Atlanta growing up
as a teen, I used to sneak out during children's church to explore the area & see what trouble I could get into (actually some pretty interesting stories on this)
gays would frequently hit on me (that church is in midtown, gay central even in the early '80's) and the homeless were always around begging
I never gave them cash, but sometimes, I would buy them a sandwich
that is still my standard, although I run into it a lot less
I will give you food, but not cash

Just say no.
If you give them anything they will continue to come around.
If everyone gives them nothing, they will move along to more “ compassionate” place.

If you want to help a poor person, find one that doesn’t ask for help and help them.
Buy someone’s groceries that is ahead of you in line or something like that.
Anyone that approaches you for money is doing it as an occupation.

So, you’d jack it in the middle of the street?

Can hardly ever go wrong quoting B Franklin.
I stongly recommend First American.
A great read.

I'll give a guy five bucks for a bottle of Vodka. That's the best thing that'll happen to him all day.

Very infrequently, usually only the friendlier ones. Try and make sure when I do give them money it’s enough they can get fricked up and get something to eat. It’s Gotta suck sleeping on the street.

Never do it. Been told for years it is one of the worst things you can do. If you want to give... do it at a shelter where the money goes for stuff like food and bedding and not a 40oz.

Impulse, on a given day. But I seldom meet on foot; mostly the guys at red lights. Try to size up their real need vs. con for drugs/booze. One particular guy has a leg missing; He get the benefit of the doubt. Probably makes more than I do.

I used to see this guy in Atlanta
he was always on the exit to GA Tech off the 75/85 connector
I'd give him a dollar sometimes, this was late 90's early 2000's (moved to Bham in December of 2002)

I've seen the same homeless Hispanic family, complete with kids and a puppy, in the Wal-Mart parking lot for 9 months now. The dog is no longer a puppy! They really do need to come up with a new scam.
