Additional gov't regulation is always bad for the consumer. It means higher prices. less quality, and few options.
Ever notice the burden lies with co summers to prove the regulations are bad, costly, and expensive, rather than the government having the burden showing their regulations have merit?

“Why do you care, it’s just some regulation and you don’t buy lots for ceiling fans” is a regulatory version of why do you fear government searching your home if you have nothing to hide”.

How much more efficient can a small electric motor get?

Well obviously each new fan comes with a 2' square solar panel that mounts to your roof. You just run the wires up there to it. Easy and saves at least 1kWh a year.

Your answer to my question is very reminiscent of the time back when the Feds proposed new light bulb efficiency standards prohibiting incandescent light bulbs in favor of LED bulbs.

I love my LED bulbs. They last a very long time, but they also burn cool which prevents fixture heat damage.

That being said, some people's electric power is not clean and it kills LED bulbs very quickly. For them, incandescent is the only choice.

Government "one size fits all" is often a dumb mistake.

We were discussing the exact thing at work and came to the same conclusion, LED lights are much better and the cost isn’t higher than the old bulbs.

But why was the government involved?

LEDs should have won out in a free market because the price is right now and they are better in every way.

I think the government getting involved with toilets undercut their position on a lot if things. People don’t trust them when it comes to consumer products.

A free market should determine what ceiling fan we choose to use. Make it more efficient and affordable and people will buy it.
Competition begets innovation.

Hey Russian.

My eyes still aren’t adapting to the ceiling light requirements put in place 10 years ago. Light triggered headaches are a part of my life now. At least until I’m able to find enough old fixtures to replace all in our home.

Hey, Ms. Grrrl.

I'm not sure what you mean about getting light triggered headaches.

LEDs should have won out in a free market because the price is right now and they are better in every way.

The government got involved in order to provide an incentive to bulb manufacturers to build new plants or install new equipment to make the new types of efficient bulbs.

Back when the legislation was passed and signed by W. Bush it put in a multi-year delay for implementation. (I think it was originally a 3 or 4 year time before the old bulbs were not allowed to be sold but the deadline got pushed back more than once.)

At the time of the legislation the new bulbs were double the price of the old tungsten bulbs. Only the most fanatical treehuggers would spring for a bulb that cost double.

So sales were low for the new bulbs and would remain low until companies started making the new bulbs in volume and competition started doing what it always does....drive prices down.

The legislation sped up the process of creating incentives for manufacturers to start producing the new LED bulbs in a high enough volume to drive prices down. And it worked.

Because they are coming for current ceiling fans. Hell, they have said as much. And once they do, what we will be left will be shite. That is the way our government works. It is amazing anyone could screw up ceiling fans. But they will. And after they do so, they will proudly boast “look what we did for you!”

It is almost like they hate us and want us miserable….
